Getting my son a knife for graduating and to take into the army...Im a ZT virgin

I know this is the Kershaw/ZT forum...
But what about the Spyderco Manix 2? It's a big, heavy duty knife, with good blade steel, a nice locking system, from a great company, and runs around $75. Also, You have a few options on this one as you can get, Satin, Black, or the XL which is larger, FFG, and s30v.
Also there are still sprints around that you can pick up pretty cheap here on the forums.
If I was going into the Military with a budget and wanting something really awesome, I would go with the Manix 2.

Unless of course you can get the ZT 0550..

Im a little biased but id say a 550 over the rest. Less parts to deal with or possibly get stuck or something and that could be bad in a high pressure situation. I think any quality manual folder, with a frame lock would be good.

And congrats on his eagle scout! What kind of eagle scout project are yall doing? Its been almost 10 years now but i made eagle scout with Troop 610, Some of the best times iv had were in the woods with my dad and brother and our troop.

Howdy,
No matter what you get him, leave it at home when he goes in. They will take it away at basic training and will probably be "lost". No trainee is allowed to carry a personal knife. Let him pick it up after he comes home for his first leave and better understands what is what. Every unit has its own policy on personal knives after he deploys.
Cheers...from a former Army Recon NCO.

HEY GUYS!!

Sorry I've been MIA! I was out of town visiting family for the 4th and lately we've had quite a few family issues to attend to, but all is good!

Im not going to be able to respond individually to everyone, but boy all of you guys fully exceded my expectations on recommendations!

You guys have pointed out so many little things that I have over looked!

Many of you guys were talking about the Adamas which I didnt even think about. I normally overlook the heavy duty over built knives simply because I dont care for them, but my son sure does.

I did a good bit of reading on it and I think I'm going to go with that. For the price and what you get it seems great, I like the little touch of the included sheath as well!

When I was mentioning the ZT's with the recurves, I can honestly say the thought of field sharpening hadnt crossed my mind one bit. Im going to grab him some small field stones as well.

Kind of bummed out I wont be gifting him a ZT, I've been wanting to caress one of those for a while now. I've heard nothing but the best things from ZT, and I look forward to doing business with them in the future.

Thank you all sooo much! This forum is really a special place with a lot of very bright individuals!
