I hope I do not step on anyones feet or insult with this post. I'm just looking for some good advice and recommendations. I bought my first knife 15 years ago. Ever since, I have wanted to forge my own blades.I now have $$ to do so and at the end of this Summer will have a substantial size place to get a shop started. I have been gathering sites for supplies and must say, its overwhelming just how many tools as well as places that sell them are around.

I was wondering what the most important and only tools needed would be to get started. Here I am looking on the Blacksmithsdepot.com and seeing all kinds of Anvils, Hammers, Forges, vises and grinders. Is there a simple set-up that would get me from start to finish on a knife? I've got over 100 sketches and would like to make some of them eventually. Many Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Hammer, anvil, at least 1 pair of box end tongs, steel of course, files, sandpaper and a cheap drill press. There ya go, every thing you need to make a knife, don't really need the sandpaper though.

I'd also toss in some welding gloves and a leather apron (I use cheap Harbor Freight ones) , safety glasses/shield and a baseball cap for safety gear. Oh yeah, shoes that won't melt :o don't ask.
