Hello Everyone!
As a newbie I was wondering if anyone could help get me started! I'm looking for the best advice regarding how to make a cheap propane forge, best hammers on the market, and steels to use. As an engineer I'm familiar with the mechanics of metallurgy but can't seem to find the materials I'd like to use to make my first knife. Many people use AISI 1085 high carbon steel, which is decent but lacks any alloying. Unfortunately I'd like an 0.80% carbon content or better but no alloy steels even remotely come close as per the AISI handbook. Any suggestions? Finally once the material is determined, I'm not sure whether or not to water jet a knife blank or forge a billet. Which do you prefer and why?

Thanks again!

I may go with M30 Tool Steel and try to apply a physical vapor deposition Titanium - Carbide Hamon. How do you go about adding a fuller?
