Has anyone here tried using parks 50 to quench a Katana type sword? I am wondering if it has enough speed to cause the upswept curve in a blade like water does.

Works fine if the steel is right for a fast quench (1095 & 1084). I use AAA for 5160.
I usually forge in a little sori to start with.

Hello Bill. You will have to forge in some sori. It does not produce the curve that water will. The parks may produce a little. I quenched a 10" bowie blade in parks made out of 1084, no curve. Bailey Bradshaw uses parks on his katanas and forges in sori. Hope this helps.

Hey Bill-

It was great seeing you last week-end.

I haven't done a sword in it yet, but I quenched a 17" blade in Parks and got zero curve. Actually, I redid it about 4 times just for experiments sake, and after the 4th time (descending thermal cycles in salt in between quenching) and it curved DOWN about 1/2"!!!

I'd forge it in. :)

Thanks everyone.

Nick I had a good time talking with you also. The downward curve that you got is what I was expecting but you saved me from an experiment today. I already have a very nice Katana folded forged and filed ready to heat treat it is straight right now and I dont really want to reforge it so water it is. Wish me luck
