i have about had it. 3 guards 3 broken bits. what i am trying to do is put a guard on this hidden tand knife im making. i have to hand slot the guard material and is very time consuming like 1 hr per try. when i get guard all slotted and sitting nice i glue in place and attempt to drill out with 1/16 cobalt bit. 3 bits and 3 wasted guards unless u guys know how to drill out the broken bit that is stuck. what is really pissed me off is in the guard material feels like im hitting rocks or something. the material is 416 ss 1/8 inch thick when some1 screwed up since i had ordered 1/4 but didnt catch it until now. my plan was to solder the guard and pin it inplace while i solder it. but at this rate i have about had it . yes i am going very slow with the drill. any way to get this damn brooken bit out of this guard so i can salvage it otherwise not sure what im going to do . i know it cant be this damn hard.

you could try putting a little nitric acid in the pin hole and letting it eat away at the bit, since the guard is stainless i dont think it will hurt it. try a test piece first. im sure there are plenty of other ways, but this just may work.it wont take much and the bit should loosen up.

The bit probably gets galled up, creates tons of friction. This happens with alluminum and some stainless. Sounds like you're trying to drill the guard and tang all at once (?) Try drilling the guard and then fit it up, then drill the tang.
As for the busted drill bit....heat everything up if you can. (Doesn't have to be red hot) Then put it in the freezer for a while. Try to drive it out if you have a through hole, if not, the busted bit should be soft enough to drill out or pull out if there's a stub. This works with taps too.
 
i was backing out the bit and putting into a wood block to clean the stuff off of it. luckily i had many 1/16 bits probably wouldnt be a problem if i had the 1/4 material then i could use a larger bit and rod to penn it on. anyways im not made any more was just so frustarted u guys now how it is sometimes.
