One day I was searching for treasure with a metal detector on a farmers ground. I heard a dog suddenly start yelping loudly and swiftly. I investigated and the farmers dog had hiw paw caught in a fur trap. I unsuccessfully tried to free the poor hound. Once the mutt let go of my hand { I later spent five days in the hospital from a nasty infection}, I raced to the landowner and he gave me a lesson on this predictament. He threw his jacket over the dogs head, grabbed the top of the dogs snout and squeezed. He explained that he was squeezing its lips against its teeth and the dog wouldnt bite. With his other hand he opened the trap.

Ahead a couple of years. My large dog is yelping rapidly and loudly. I recognize that cry. Sure enough ,there she was scared and her foot caught. I acted as instructed and the dog was freed in seconds.

Even if its your own dog, they will be scared and bite. This procedure works.

good to know.

that might actually be a good tactic to use in an animal attack. granted you may only get a second or two, but anything helps.

Great advise, and unfortunately it does happen more than most realize. One of a trappers worst experiences is finding a neighbor's dog caught in one of his canine sets. Canine, meaning fox, coyote or wolf not fido from down the road.

Good tip, I have heard it another way: Grab the dogs bottom jaw and push it towards the dogs chest. The theory is that a dog can't bite down with his top jaw.

Your way sounds a bit easier.
