Well, whether I'm actually 'done' or not is probably up to debate, but for now, I'm done buying knives as I start school soon. Of course, that didn't stop me from picking up my two 'grail knives' recently; A Spyderco Phoenix and a Microtech Amphibian.

It's nice not desperately wanting a new knife-- although that Gentleman Jim has been calling to me for some time now...

Anyone here 'completed' their collection? What were your latest grail knives?

A true knife enthusiast never completes their collection. Part of the enjoyment is searching for and acquiring new knives. If you complete a part of your collection, for instance you have one of every Spyderco Military, then you move to collecting something else. I may have a few knives on my wish list, and supposing I managed to find them, in the process I would probably find something else I was interested in, and something after that, and so on. There are lots of manufacturers making lots of models, and even more custom makers, so it will never end.

Right now I have 3 on my wish list, or 4, or maybe 5, or 6. Give my unlimited cash and I could probably pick out 12 right away.

+1 on never complete! Just when you think that you have completed your collection something else will call your name. You already said that Jim is calling you, it will just be a matter of time before you answer!

You guys are bad for my wallet! :p

Although I HAVE thought about getting a full-on custom knife, made after my own design... That won't be for awhile yet.

I thought I did with a LG 21 Sebenza only to realize my taste had changed nearly 360 degrees. I'm very content, as strange as it may sound with my Carbon Opinel 06 in my pocket, every time I get the urge to chase down some expensive knife, it sorta put everything in perspective by carrying this simplistic, utilitarian folder to help me realize, that I don't really "need" another knife. It's never ending, be careful. I still buy a considerable amount, often on whims.

Of the few Ive bought Ive only ever considered 1 or 2 to be "grails" as there are only so many "holy grails" otherwise its not much a grail. With that being said, the ZT0454 is a grail of mine and will be mine once released. Oh yes, it will be mine.

Lately I've had good "grail" luck. I've recently picked up a spyderco C22 Michael Walker, a spyderco c15 and c19 Terzuola, a spyderco SpyKer, and a ZT 0500 MUDD.

Here was my grail

I got it back in February. Probably bought at least 15 knives since then.................I'm sorry buddy, but the addiction is never finished.

RevDevil, your "next" object of affection has beautiful lines. May I ask what knife that is?

I'm fairly certain that's the Emerson Gentleman Jim I spoke of. In all honesty, that will probably be the subject of my next knife purchase, whenever that may be.

The whole "grail" concept is totally alien to me. There's never just ONE knife I want for my collection to be complete, and there likely never will be.

I understand Grail knives well. I had one I spent nearly 20 years trying to get. I finally did and I can see flaws in it I didn't know existed before. It sits mostly. Heck, the old knife's ergonomics are not up to what I'm now used to. On the other hand I wouldn't trade it for any other knife in the world just because it teased me for so long. I've kept my grails mostly achievable since then. Sal G. has actually made more than one of my new grails ( mule teams, as well as the Cruwear millie) plus helped me locate an old fixed blade to buy that I wanted since it was first imported but I couldn't afford it then.

I owe that guy more favors than I can count. Thank you Sal! Grails or not though I sure can't stop getting all excited with most every new release anyway. Sprint runs and new steels anyway. There was a time I had to search high and low, even import knives to try new steels. Now eventually Spyderco gets around to many or even most of of the best steels.

It's sure made things easy as well as giving me knives in the styles and cost that allow me to actually use these new steels.

BTW, most grails are due to the steels in the knife. I'm as bad a steel junky as anyone I know though I don't do excellent tests like Jim does. I just figure out what I like about the new steels and what I don't and let it go at that. Sounds selfish but in reality there are others that make much better testers and teachers and communicators than I do. About the best I do for the community is occasionally lend a blade to someone for testing.

I believe I can say that I have reached the point where I am content with what I have, and it gives me plenty to choose from for EDC and other tasks.

However, it doesn't mean that something else won't catch my eye down the road, but I don't have to buy anything else for the time being.

Fair enough! For me, to call a knife a 'grail' would mean the knife has to be one you want above nearly all others, for one reason or another. It doesn't mean an end to the collection, although I know these two won't be leaving. I'll sell all my other knives before I let these two go, with the exception of my Delica 4 and 940.

I'm not sure whether I want to carry and use the Amphibian yet, actually! I think it'd be a shame if it just sat in a box, but on the other hand... discontinued, near mint condition lol. I'll probably get over it and carry it anyway!

That's actually one of the main reasons I picked up a Caly 3 CF; first experience with ZDP-189, totally blown away by it. I love Spyderco for their variety.

I agree, it's always interesting to know how the latest and greatest preform, but I bought my two grails because of the design, F/F, as well as how well they feel in hand... I was lucky enough to handle each before purchase. I have several knives in 154 CM and VG-10 already.

School in more important than getting your latest knife urge fulfilled.

Which is why I made sure I'd have more than enough before buying them. Also why a Jim hasn't found it's way into my pocket just yet. :) I've been looking forward to attending for years.

Yeah, I don't have one like that, lol. Even my wants vary on a week to week basis. This week I got a Cold Steel Boar Hunter, cause I was really wanting it...but several times in the past, I really wanted it too, then decided I wanted something else more and got those instead. Then this week I was really considering a waved Spyderco Matriarch, cause I really wanted it(and still do!), but then when it came time to order, I decided I wanted the Boar Hunter(and the rest of my order) more. The only thing consistent about my wants is that they're inconsistent, lol.
