I bought a Cold Steel Master Hunter in carbon steel last month from an online vendor. When the order arrived the sheath was defective- the strap that holds the knife in place could not be snapped shut around the handle of the knife due to improper installation at the factory of the two snap pieces. This means that the knife could fall out of the kydex sheath.

With the vendor's permission I returned this knife for exchange. However, the new knife arrived today and it has the same problem! This must be a defective run of sheaths. I already have a Master Hunter in stainless steel I bought elsewhere, and the strap on the sheath snaps shut quite nicely and holds the knife securely, so I know this is not the way this sheath is supposed to work.

Meanwhile, I stopped by another vendor today who is mostly online but who also has a store. I bought a couple of Photon II LED lights (no problem) plus an Inova XO LED flashlight. The latter really impressed me with how bright it is-you can turn it on through the packaging which is how I could tell. Well, I get home, take it out of the packaging, and guess what? There's a loud and irritating rattle coming from the head of the flashlight! There's not anything loose on the outside- it's something inside that I can't get to. This is just not acceptable, especially on such an expensive flashlight, and it doesn't give me any confidence that the light will be reliable in the future.

The two vendors shall remain nameless for now until I see how well they handle these returns. They have a chance to make a good or bad name for themselves here on this forum. ;)

Speaking of that, I bought a Bark River Gameskeeper this last summer and I found it had a slight problem with the end of the handle. Mike Stewart of Bark River took care of it at no charge and with no hassle. Good service, Mike!

I know what you mean. Lately I've received a few knives with flaws and it drives me crazy.

As you probably know, Cold Steel makes neither their knives nor their sheaths. The sheath that came with my MH was made by Blade Tech and it's pretty decent, maybe they're cutting corners by going with a new provider.

Just to be sure, you bought a 1st quality Cold Steel right? The sheath that comes with factory seconds is not always the same as for the firsts.

Yes, it was first-quality, not a second. I know that Cold Steel doesn't make their products but they're still responsible for the quality of what they sell.

Meanwhile, it turns out that the other vendor put down the wrong Innova on the receipt and they overcharged me! I did ask about the price when I checked out- it seemed a bit high but I was told it was the right price. This was the one Innova I wanted where I didn't have a good idea of the prices that are out there. I didn't find the mistake until I looked at the receipt last night. Yes, I should have been more alert, but then they should be charging the right price.

I'm going there now and we'll see if I can get the flashlight exchanged and the overcharge refunded.

This is hardly news, but it's a mixed bag. I had a PincetonTec LED die on the first set of batteries. I sent it back. In a week a brand new flashlight arrived from PrincetonTec. :D

I TRY to check vendors on a forum before doing business with them. The goal is to avoid those with too many problems OR an unwillingness to correct problems. Really, there are many sellers with super reps.

Well, TAD Gear came through. They replaced the Innova and refunded the overcharge, though not without a glitch due to their cash register showing a higher price than their web site. However, it's all straightened out now and I'm satisfied. I had a good experience with them previously when I returned a Mission knife. However, they do charge a restocking fee if the merchandise is not defective.

It's pretty cool to get web prices at a store (it's in Oakland, CA). :) Their prices are not always the very lowest (nobody is) but are very competitive. Sometimes they *are* the lowest- they sell the Photon II mini-LED for $9.99. They also gave me a great deal on a Benchmade 520.

I expect the other vendor to respond tomorrow. I guess this thread should really be moved to Good, Bad, and Ugly.
