Ghost jade ?

Simple question really... how transparent is ghost jade/avacado G10 etc... I have a request for a hidden tang in this handle medium but I don't see it much out there in that format. Leads me to suspect it will be obvious where the tang sits.

Examples would be appreciated too. Looking for a unique bolster color to go with it as well...

Jade g-10 is actually uncolored g10. The thinner stuff is pretty translucent. Regardless it's not see thru so depending how thick you leave the handle, I don't see it as a problem.

I would maybe call Chuck at Alpha he carries the blocks of Jade. He might have more insight on the finished product.

Thanks. I was looking at the larger chunks or blocks USAknifemaker has. The seem a little more avacado than some of the others, at least from the photo. Will be 5/32" thick tang with about 1/3" thick on either side. Single pin. I was going to try something unique color wise, but looking at other examples I think just stainless furniture, black and jade will be the ticket.

If I make sure the tang is nice and bright during glue up I assume that will cut down on any shadowing, no? I had noticed black and white liners can change the color significantly.

I've used it. It's more translucent than transparent. Also, the stuff I have is HARD to cut.

Andy Roy uses it some. I love the look of it, but he nearly always uses liners so pics wouldn't be much help. That said, the g10 takes on the hue of whatever color liner one uses, orange is popular. I'm having mine done with natural micarta and white g10 under and it's quite lovely.

I would think that a hidden tang knife with natural g10 would look freaking awesome. Might force you to do your work carefully since it would be on display (sort of), but I think it really might be worth the effort.

Here is a piece cut down to 1/4 thick, I bought a large slab from USAKnifeMaker.

If you buy it like I did 3/4" thick 12"x12" you'll need a wet saw, the stuff is a bear to cut. It is also more green than in the picture, thats due to the color of the light

Yeah Daniel Fairly was telling me about a wet tile saw for such things. Somehow I haven't had to cut g10 yet, but yeah, I hear it's a huge pita. I think I'll order it in something fairly thin, no greater than .250, mostly because I only do full tangs for now, but also because I'll use a liner.

Would it look terrible to super glue two pieces together for a hidden tang handle?

Thank you for that pic. Exactly what I wanted to see... It looks like it will be opaque enough... Just make sure I don't leave a lot of slop in there.

I haven't worked a lot of G10, but have cut it in thin sheets before and know it will eat up a scroll saw blade, so I assumed the metal cutting bandsaw would be best. Nice slow speed and all... I have to cover head to toe even when using it as a spacer. I'm one of those people that gets bad skin irritation from the fibers...

Thankfully it doesn't bother me. But if you're effected like that go buy a cheap tilesaw no dust at all just goes down into pan

I like using liners to change the tone of the translucent jade.

Jade on white (I call this Doublemint):

(Tease the names if you want to, naming everything you do is a secret to selling knives I learned from watching Jerry Busse.)

That is pretty slick, how thick are the jade scales to get that effect with the liners? Hard to tell the size but going to guess close to 1/8 at spots? I love the Orange Burst and Margarita. Fiddle do you mind if I borrow that Margarita color?

Whats neato is that all of the above jade was cut off of the same sheet. The differences are 100% liner (I call the middle liner there a pinstripe). I use 1/4" scale material over a colored liner that varies in size. Meaning that the jade was from a 1/4" thick sheet.

Use away, its just me playing with building blocks. Glad you like it.

Andy, you're close but to be like Busse, you need to use at least 3 word names instead of single words. that way, your fan-boys can use the acronyms (FFBM, MOAB, NMFBM, NMSFNO, etc) when they talk about your knives so no one outside of forum regulars will know what the hell they are talking about.

Haha, I'm not too proud to admit trying to figure out what the hell those acro's mean.

Andy, between the blade textures, names, and liners, pins, and bullseyes, I'd say you've got your brand down pat. Some of the other guys have an angle that defines their design too. I can take one look at a Nguyen handle and know exactly what it is. Busse is pretty identifiable too. As a buyer I'm sure I'm not the only one that likes a signature design element. I really think it's very smart. Some say that everything has been done, but obviously that's not true. Find an alternative handle material, a slightly different way to attach them, even using highly thought of super steels that have big appeal like Big Chris or Phil Wilson do.

I'm quick to point out that I'm not a maker or seller, but I know what's appealing to a buyer. ;)

I have a giant sheet of this stuff that I have never touched. I am so glad that Andy has showed what the different liners and pins look like. Its all about the liner! Got some gears turning now. Thanks a bunch!

Haha. I took it as a joke. The reality is that you have to use quirky nicknames that you think drive/attract the searches to your product. The Fiddleback NNFNBC would prolly drive them to Jerry.

Thats cool. Glad it helped.

That is making me wonder if I hollowed out a core, like taking the pith out of antler, and filled with dyed epoxy what kind of colors I could get...

Thanks. I'm a fiddleback fan. Saw yours... where I actually got the statement about the liners changing the color significantly.

Thanks fellows. This one's gonna be neat I think...

The tactical knife in my avatar is named ACAM.
(As cool as me...)

Going after the HEST and DEFT etc crowd... lol. But the guys here were all calling it the shark knife due to its resemblance to a shark. So the release name will actually be MAKO (Modern Attack Knife for Operators)

I usually let my wife name em. I'd call em 'the brown thing' or 'the shiny one with wood thing... '

Thanks.
