ghostown custom knives

These knives pretty much define the term " a work of art"....you have incredible talent, Sir....welcome aboard !

I am moving this from Custom and Handmade to the General Knife Discussion.

Wise choice, Esav since Ghostown also applies his talents to other brands of knives besides Buck. He also customizes some pretty fancy Zippo lighters, money clips and belt buckles if I'm not mistaken. :)

Welcome Sir. Some beautiful work for sure! I have to ask, do you or have you ever worked with Carbon Fiber for the slabs? Thanks in advance... ~kevin~

actually no

he specializes in semi-precious stones(malachite turquoise fossilized dinosaur bone ect.) that are all hand placed and hand polished.

while he does do custom orders I don't believe he has been confronted by carbon fiber as of yet

No problem, you're new here but very welcome.

Born in Michigan,he spent his childhood taking things apart to see how they worked. It carried on till Ghostown made his first knife in the Navy in the early 60s. In the late 60s he moved to San Francisco where he belonged to a group of artists and musicians who shared a building. There were several Garys, so he became Ghostown Gary, for his love of spending time in the mountains in those old miner ghost towns all around San Francisco. This name stuck, and he has used it since the 80s when he created his own particular style. It has evolved over the years. While in San Francisco he went to college on the GI Bill, studying Art. In the late 80s he taught Lapidary for the City of Phoenix. Then in the 90s he spent 5 years traveling all over the US in a 1969 Dodge Champion Motor Home with his wife and two youngest kids. His work shop was an awning that would be set up at every forest camp site. After those years he settled in Pine in a big old house with his family. He works out of a little workshop in the back yard. Thanksgiving weekend in 2007, 5 minutes after walking out of the shop, it blew up and burned to the ground. In that shop were all those years of designs, pictures, his tools, and a lifetime of irreplaceable memorbelia. He has made a startling fast comeback. He is back out there working daily, morning till night. Ghostown is in his late 60s, has arthritis in his hands, back, and hips. It is amazing that he works still, but this is his love. He will work the rest of his life creating. There is no question.

Thank you for Ghostown's bio. More information in your post about your father than I had been able to glean since purchasing my 1st Ghostown Buck 110. Your father's craftsmanship is in a league of its own. :)

indeed he will customize just about anything sent his way... my favorite so far had to be the belt buckle derringers he has done

unfortunately all the pictures he has taken over the years burned up with his workshop

he has done a few of the derringers and kalingas/bowis/daggers and many more

if i am not mistaken his first knife in the navy was a butter knife he ground into a "kris" blade

Thanks for the bio, photos, and the stories. Your dad is a talented man, and I wish him further successes.

Be well,

Coop

very impressive work there.
wouldn't buy one myself, I prefer something far plainer, I would be afraid of dammaing something like these, but I can defineately see the attraction for other people.

did I mention his work still carries bucks lifetime guarantee?

I do agree however , I go for more tactical plain stuff myself but his work can be applied in some very interesting places

I.E. we just inlaid some bio hazard symbols the size of a dime centered in either side of the stock on my lever action 30-30 with great barrier reef coral as a backround stone, it looks amazing

getting ready to inlay some crosshair designs in my sniper rifle with malachite as a back round(the stock is forest green)

we added sterling punisher sculls to my SOG pentagon

and my hand forged Japanese tactical tanto now has a cobra symbol as menuki and a skull as an accent all sterling

...in example

in fact he can do just about anything TO just about anything

EDIT: ok so I misquoted his sales pitch.
his work will stand up to some pretty nasty abuse the recoil from a firearm (9mm 357mag) but he does charge a small fee now for repairs. however he is the only one(to our knowlage) that buck will allow to apply filework to the spine and still hold their lifetime guarantee.
