If you have the tools and the time, why not make some jimping [thumb grooves] now in that same area on the knife?

I used a special paint to cover the place of the top guard which has a rubber like finish. That's enough for me.

I too cut the top guard off. But I hated how the blade looked. I trimmed the width down so the blade was even down the whole edge and re ground the edge. Also put jimping where the top guard used to be.
