Gift for a professional hunter?

I kindly like that Falkniven PHK..... a convex grind too, if I'm not mistaken.

The Dozier knives are very nice, but I agree with Elkpro when it comes to skinning and cleaning. I prefer a convex ground blade.

I think I might go the custom route, so knifemaker recommendations are welcome.

To ensure that I get him something he'd like and use, I'm going to quiz his father and wife -- both of whom hunt with him. I'd talk to my friend directly, but he'd never let me do it for him, no matter how much he'd like it or how much I'd like to. He's that kind of guy.

Here's one that a good customer of mine ordered for his PH.
He really loved it.
That said, Burt Foster would be a good choice as well.

Thanks for the pic, Karl. While my compliment doesn't carry the weight of most people here, that is a very handsome knife. Wow! I'll get in touch with you this week with some ideas.

Give him a Bob Dozier KS3 Professional Guide Knife if your budget will allow it. That is a great all around hunting knife that I am sure he will appreciate. Link below:

AG Russell is a great guy to buy it from also. You will also never hear anyone complain about a Dozier knife especially about its sharpness or edge holding.

+1 here, dozier makes a good blade, at first I didnt like the idea of D2 steel becuse its harder to sharpen than my carbon blades, but mate once its sharp it stays sharp for along time and if you dont let it get to dull its not that hard to sharpen and keep sharp. I recently killed, butchered and packed 5 goats with my dozier and I didnt have to stop and sharpen it halfway through.

the only thing with doziers is there expensive, but if you can part with the cash your friend will have a nice blade for his whole life

One of my closest friends is quitting his job in Birmingham and moving to Africa to be a professional hunter. It's one of those lifetime dream kind of things, and he's all set up to apprentice for a year with a known and very respected PH.

The last time he went hunting, he took along my Rat Izula to "let it taste blood" (his amusing words) and said he liked it but found it a bit small. I don't hunt and know nothing about the pasttime or the tools required for the job, beyond a gun and camo.

Do y'all -- with considerably more knife and hunting knowledge than I -- have any recommendations for a knife I could give him as a going away present? Obviously, I'd like it to be something he'd use in the bush and at their base.

Thanks for your help.

i rekon have a talk with your friend about it and see hwat HE would like. sure, you lose the "surprise" factor, but you KNOW it's what he wants and will use.
