Gift for son: Ontario Rat 1 vs Spyderco Tenacious

I'd say the RAT 1 would be a better choice. Have you also considered a Kershaw Skyline? USA Made, 14C26 Steel (Better then AUS 8 and 8CR13MoV) Flipper for fast opening and the kershaw warranty that I think is better then Spyderco and Ontario. I am not sure it comes in combo edge though. Although its a bit more traditional the Spyderco Lightweight UKPK is a fantastic knife for the price, although it doesn't lock but then again if your careful this shouldn't be much of an issue, if he is gonna be carrying it at work i think the FRN UKPK looks alot less threatening then the ones listed above. Just something to consider...

Thanks for all the positive feedback and replies! This is a great community to be a part of. My main reasons for those two were the 4 way clip, combo-edge, price(especially now that i'm buying both) and they are similar in size to what he carries now. I'm sure there are other options out there but then it would just make it that much harder to decide. And since i've already decided on buying both so he can have his choice I think he'll be satisfied. He likes his cheap & heavy $5 knife so i'm sure he'll love these. Now i'm contemplating giving him his gift early so he can have a 2 month trail with each blade ;)

After reading the thread regarding the hex screws on Spyderco's I'm having doubts now  I plan on moving the clip at least once if not twice. Maybe I do need another alternative. Any suggestions guys? Previous standards still apply.

You could go with the Spyderco FRN UKPK, its about the same price, made in usa and has a side to side tip up pocket clip, there are many different blade styles to choose from, but thee is no lock but that hasn't been much of a problem for me...

I would have to go with the RAT 1, I bought three when I first saw them and gave my eldest children two of them. Good strong design, I would like to see it made with a better steel but AUS 8 is a good enough steel for most uses. the handle design is great, open back for easy cleaning, smooth in the hand and pocket. I plan on buying more to put away for my younger children's and grandchildren's first knives. That being said, I have several Spyderco's and plan on getting many more as funds allow.

You shouldn't have a problem...You just need a 1/16" hex bit. Spyderco sent me more screws which I received yesterday after I told them what happened. Just make sure you use the right size and you should be good.

Since someone mentioned Spyderco Endura, I'll second that motion.

You wll NOT be getting the "leftover" knife.... You are about to introduce the newest "Knife Nut" to society........ Cool.

Just some models to google:
chill, scamp, clash, oso sweet, blitz, volt 2

those are just the one's that are comparable to the RAT 1 or Tenacious, and under 26 bucks.

I just got the Kershaw Volt 2 and I love it. It has no blade play whatsoever. The speedsafe snaps open with authority. The blade is hair popping sharp and the clip is extremely strong. I would totally go for the Volt 2!

My son is a lefty but he loves his RAT1. I suppose he will also love the Tenacious if he owns one. I cant find any fault with the RAT1 although i wish it had a G10 handle...haha....still a great buy at $28.

I don't own either the Tenacious or the RAT-1, but I do own the Persistence (smaller version of Tenacious) and my good friend has a RAT-1.

The RAT is pretty insane, in a good way. It feels great in the hand, and looks pretty sweet. The only thing I don't like about it is that it has like a billion screws (exaggeration). My friend and I were taking apart our knives (RAT and Kershaw Skyline), and I probably could have taken mine apart and back together like 3 times in the time it'll take him to do it once. Lots of screws probably means really sturdy though ;)

I'd also suggest the Persistence (but you've already decided on what to get, so guess it doesn't really matter anymore), too, since it's a "shorter-Tenacious." The fingerhole is really fun, and it also feels nice in the hand, too. I am a little worried of cutting myself with it due to the "lack" of finger choil, but that'll probably be more or so my fault than the knife's.

if you're worried about screws coming loose you could use some locktite blue for insurance.

Been waiting for my rat 1 to arrive in mail for a week can't wait ,that said I vote kershaw blackout combo

I own the Tenacious and have handled the Rat.
All things considered, pretty much a toss up. Both are good value.
Really don't think the screws are an issue.

Personally I prefer the Tenacious, I don't care for the feel of the RAT.
Plus, IMHO the tenacious is slightly better....quality, construction, f&f. It would also be a great introduction for your son to Spyderco.

Have 'em both but Rat-1 for harder use IMO.

From scratch - fuzz stick, baton kindling, loose bigger peices, spread cotton ball, strike POS free firesteel below the pile and voila!

I always love seeing this sequence of pictures. It puts a whole new meaning to the word VALUE in knives. Good job . . .
