gift: friend needs a knife for cold weather hiking/climbing

I'd go for a lightweight but strong fixed blade. There are a lot of them on the market, so you've got plenty to choose from. I like the Busse Assault Shaker. He'll probably have an ice axe and maybe a small hatchet for heavy chores, so he probably doesn't need a large knife. If he has to use it for an ice pick, the AS should hold up.
