I'm going to order a knife for my brother inlaw but I'm having a hard time deciding. Here's the gig.

He's a casual knife guy

Looking for fixed blade that would serve as a one knife quintessential camper/bushcraft/hiking

No size problems one way or the other.

<$100 or right around.

He wants to start getting into knives so I want to get him a nice starter. Thanks for the ideas :D

Kabar bk5 magnum camp

Great balance of "one-knife-does-all" option.

There are better job specific; choppers, food prep, firewood prep/batoning options out there, but few can do a little bit of everything with as good a balance.
Large enough to chop
Thin enough to slice
Sturdy enough for camp chores

And if you need to fend off a wild mountain man, bobcat, or grizzly, well, if a knife was my only option, it's one of the best options for that as well ;)

Great balance of "one-knife-does-all" option.l, and can still be found at pretty great prices...

*added - i mentioned it another similar topic thread a while back: if you shop around, you can get a bk5, a Mora companion for finer work, and a Swiss army huntsman all together for just over $100, and the three together make for a great camping trio that covers all your basic knife needs...

Yep. Do that. Or perhaps pair a BK5 with a Leatherman Wingman.

I've always been a little freaked out by the strange up sweep

Makes it perform better when slicing. It's not as dramatic in use as photos make it appear.

Exactly. It is One of those details that actually helps be a better "do-all" knife, for slicing and finer detail jobs.

Here's mine next to it's little brother, the bk15

And here it is next to a Mora companion and SAK Huntsman

Thanks for the tips, I've been watching a bunch of bk5 YouTube.. Now I want one !
It can do a whole lot more than he will figure out how to, probably a good start

Yeah, I love it. And you did say

Definitely one of the better "one knife, etc" options out there, esp. in your budget, and even a casual fan can appreciate the Kabar brand.

Only thing it's not "great" for is casual hiking, but one more reason to add a cheap Mora to the mix, they're super light and convenient.

Definitely disappointing to see them both, (bk5 & 15) discontinued...

Bk5 is getting discontinued ?

Yup, word dropped last year, that while there were still plenty in Stock to last quite some time yet, the 4, 5, and 15 would be made no longer :(
