Gift idea for 16yr old

Make sure it is okay with his parents/guardian first. ;)

For a 16 year old I wouldn't spend that much. The knife will get lost, abused, broken, stolen, confiscated, sold, traded, etc. I'm sure not many of us that are adults here on the forum still have a knife they owned when they were 16. I would get something in the neighborhood of a Spyderco Delica. If the new version of the Delica is available in time for his B-day then go for it.

I agree. Buy him something inexpensive but cool looking, and if he has it in 12 months time, then spend 150 bucks.

I have one of these and I am a bit embarassed to say I love it and carry it all the time. I have others but I like the style.

I think you should get him a Native for the (semi-tac)look and a SAK One Handed Trekker for general purpose. If you shop right both can be had for less than $80 ttl IMHO

When i was 15 i picked up a Benchmade 975SBT at a gunshow with money earned from my paper route. I carried and abused it for 7 years before retiring and i still have it.

Here here guys :D

I myself would not buy a piece of crap, why label your nephew like that.

In fact, id go so far as to say, if your not going to get him something decent that he can treasure an cherish, Don't get him anything at all.

Money in a B/Day card.

It doesn't have to be costly, it has to be decent quality.
Anything less and the potential for a world of hurt exists right around your purchase for him.

I bought my 13 year old nephew a BM 555 mini-grip in O.D. (Boy Scout green) and he loves that knife. The blade shape looks like some kind of creature and has already stood up to a lot of abuse. Recently bought one for myself. The Delica 4 looks interesting too.

I agree, but him somehting of good quality, or don't get him anything at all.

Thanks for all the great ideas...most of the suggestions are hard to resist but I have narrowed it to three choices...

BM Osborne 960SLV
BM Gravitator 425
Spyderco Adventura C102P

Any opinions on these?

Ok, I vote Gravitator!

Very interesting, strange, yet astetically pleasing design. The G-10 scales are definately a plus on this folder, especially the silver twill bolstery section up front. Ti liners! I also like the wharnyish blade shape plus the fact that 3.5" is my favorite size :D . The 154CM would suit him as well. The only thing I don't like about it, besides the fact that it is made for righties :jerkit: ,is that the thumb stud looks pretty pointy which can hurt your thumb after playing with it too much, but it might not be too much of a problem with BM's linerlocks, if action is easy and smooth enough.

The 960 on the other hand is D2 which may rust on him also depending on how he cares for it, not really sure as I have never had any D2 blades. Anodized AL scales will show wear and scratch marks which may dissuade use. But the blade shape and the knife over all is pretty classy, and I'm sure he'll enjoy the Axis lock.

I don't even know that to think of Dialex's design. It would definatly be a good choice. As strange as it looks I think it would make a good user.

Both Benchmade's certainly have what may be the "hi-tech" appearance a 16 yr old may desire, and any 16 yr old would be exstatic to recieve any 1 of those particularly high-quality, production blades........,yet my pick would be for the Adventura, and my opinion may be bias in that I do support all things Spyderco, however the Adventura is simply a stunning folder, and immediately stands out within that list, for whatever reasons.

It is sophistically smooth, conveniantly thin, and extremely modern, and somewhat "hi-tech", even futuristic in a Spyderco way.
With it's all stainless steel scales, positionable clip, highly innovative, hollow ground, VG-10 blade..... with it's sweeping curves, modern grinds, unsharpened swedge, recurve edge with adequate belly, .......combined with a notched thumb ramp, finger choil, and of course the unmistakable Spyderco trademark, being the ambidextrous, "Spyderco Round Hole" opening within the blade,.......... and all in one superbly engineered package, that is manufactured of a standard which has become recognised as distinctly "Spyderco"quality, and designed by none other than a fellow knife enthusiast, forumite, and most importantly fellow consumer.

Overall, the Spyderco Adventura is certainly affordable,....... considering what you get for the price, and considering it's all in one knife.

Benchmade, and Spyderco are in my opinion the best 2 production knife companies, and either way, all 3 knives are sure to be quality.
Adventura/Spyderco is my pick, for whatever it's worth. It's sure to be both functional, and practical.
I can only make my decision based on assumptions, since I do not own either one, however experience with both Spyderco's, and Benchmade's can lead to a pretty well informed view, in my opinion anyway........, and the Adventura is high up on my "To Get" list, and is a definate one,.... with 2 or more not unreasonable.

Goodluck. :)

What ashame, nobody even mentioned swamp rat rat trap. That is one of the toughest folders. He can abuse that thing and it`ll ask for more. Plus it looks cool. shomertec.com
