Hey all,
I have 2 male members of my family who were recently married. So I wanted to get a knife to give to their wives that would be appropriate. They are both 25-30 yrs old, outdoors active ladies who go camping, rock climbing and white water rafting with their mates. I first thought about the Cold Steel Tuff Lite, but my sticking point is it's blade shape - not enough tip. (limiting it's usefulness as a camping knife)

So I'm looking for suggestions.
Knife should not be overtly "masculine" in design. Remember I'm buying for Ladies.
I think a knife about the same size as the Tuff Light, about 2 1/2 '' blade would be appropriate. something the ladies can throw in their pocket books or back packs, or put in their pockets.
Decent locking system, preferably not a liner lock.
Good construction, a knife that can handle an outdoors lifestyle.
Price point no higher than $40.00 tops. I'm buying 2 as gifts.

Looking forward to your suggestions.

I'd probably go with MINi-recon 1's. I believe they could get more use out of the blade shape of a clip or spear point. Same price as the tuff lites.

In all seriousness, have you asked the question of if they want to carry knives? You can buy whatever you like but if they won't carry them then what's the point? I would recommend a SAK classic to be honest.

Ulf Krogstad,

Are you thinking of the Micro Recon 1? The Mini costs $67.50 at Blade HQ. Cool knife I thought about one for myself, but it's outside my gifting budget.

Good point Shotgun,
I just assumed that since they like camping and outdoor activities, that a small utility knife might be appropriate. I will ask their husbands if they like carrying knives.

Payton,
I really like the Rainbow Scallion frame lock. right size, looks cool and a frame lock for under $50.00

Dr-Frosg8,
WOW the Kershaw Scallion for $30.00 ??? Is this site Legit?

It is legit but that is a blem knife. Some issue it will have, may not be noticeable. No warranty either. Might be fine for us knife nuts but as a gift for someone, I would not give them a blem.

I like the idea of a RAT I or II but they are liner locks. ESEE Zancudo is about the size and shape of a RAT II but is a frame lock. If you can up your budget a little a Delica would be awesome. Maybe some other small spyderco.

Honestly I would just go with a Victorinox Farmer, Pioneer, Cadet in that order. It's slim, sturdy, lightweight, durable, very corrosion resistant, all around good knives. Plus the tools on those will lend themselves to be more useful in the longer outdoor trips.

May not have a lock but honestly as long as you don't do something stupid you should be fine. And strangely enough I find non-knife people to be more accepting of swiss army knives more than anything else and familiar with how they work. Where as I almost always have to instruct someone how to work every type of lock mechanism on a knife.

I know that I have my Victorinox Huntsman II in my pocket or backpack whenever I go outdoors no matter what other knife I have with me. It would be the Farmer but I was gifted this knife years ago and I don't mind the extra weight/bulkiness in my backpack to warrant buying a Farmer.

Could also pick up a pocket clip to go with it to attach to the keyring to help keep it in the pocket and not get lost.

Someone just posted a pic of a pocket clip on a SAK in the thread below so I am linking it to give you an idea of what I am talking about.

Craytab,
Thanks for clearing that up for me. So many bogus sites out there that I want to be careful. You're right I don't what a blem knife to give as a gift.

I would check out the Opinel No. 8 Outdoors model for around $30. It's lightweight, comes in colors (orange, blue, green, grey) and has a stainless combo edge, secure lock and built-in whistle. Chicks dig it. A Vic would make a good gift as well.

There's both a Micro and Mini. The Mini is bigger than the micro. Get the Mini off Ebay for $35 or the micro for $23.Both very small. Will not fill up tight chick pants pockets. Might get them cheaper if look around.I'd rather have the Cold Steel Aus 8 than the 420Hc on the Kershaw. But the Kershaw sure is purdy and probably more girl friendly maybe.:) I also guarantee a girl will never be able to sharpen the recurve on the Kershaw blade unless experianced sharpener. I think someone also said Ontario Rat 1 that would be another good choice. About $20 Aus 8 steel and comes in pretty colors. The Recon 1 is a sturdier knife though and the mini and micro's are smaller than it.

Wow! "The gals" are doing that these days!?!? Next thing you know those ladies are going to be going to school and getting jobs!

Dude. If these women are active outdoors people, I will wager that some "feminine", pink knife is going to be downright offensive to them.

Get them the same knife you would use.

An Ajax 'Thunderer' Coaches whistle. When camping with their husbands, your Sons, and they need something cut, then they just blow the whistle and your Sons come running to do whatever needs doing. Not very expensive, easily obtained wherever footballs are sold and well within the limited budget you have set for the Mothers of your Grandchildren.

Is this a joke? I hope so.

Seriously! Some of the responses here are really stone age.

I don't know about a pink knife being offensive. It is probably very subjective. I mean, I'm a dude and am not offended by my Pink Native. Quite like it actually. It will be my daughters some day but for now I EDC it every once in a while. It would make a good choice here but is over budget.

Marcinek's posts always burn so bad. LOL
