What's your budget and what size knife are you looking for? Without any other info I recommend taking a look at the Kizer Walkabout if he's a dog lover.

What would he be using it for? Fixed blade or folding?

Looks like you're brand new here so welcome! It's thoughtful of you to ask us for recommendations for your son's graduation. If you could answer the following questions it will greatly help us suggest relevant knives for you...

1) What's your price range? (If you don't list it you may get suggestions from $10 up to $500 or more.)
2) Does he prefer folding knives or fixed blades? (This may be assuming he already has some knives.)
3) What size knives are you considering? (For example, folding knives with a blade under 3" is considered small by most, and 3 to 3.5" medium, and much over 3.5" would be large. Fixed blade sizing varies a little more.)
4) If he does have knives, do you know what brands he likes? (It may help us suggest relevant knives.)

I was thinking fixed blade ... I had thought of something like a k bar ... But made of Damascus steel with an exotic handle

Arno Bernard is a south African designer who makes beautiful Knives mostly in n690 steel but also some in s35v, and with some exotic handle materials, one if my favorites being "crocodile leather"...

Bark River Knives is a US company which also makes some great looking Knives in all types of shapes and sizes using many different steel and handle options.

Customs is another route to consider.

Is this for the field or everyday carry?

What are your local laws concerning knives and the restrictions on them?

Another suggestion, something like a Buck Thorn (USA) with -Damascus blade and blue carbon fiber handle or a Boker Applegate (Germany) would offer something in a limited edition, not quite "custom" one of a kind, but something that not very many people will have the pleasure of ever owning...
Boker 588 hunter is another nice damascus steel option, and kanetsune (Japan) does a lot of nice damascus steel Knives.

Check out a Freeman custom folder, I think he's around $225 with a classy, practical drop point and button-type locking mechanism and happy customers.

Or just about any carbon fiber Spyderco or Benchmade, or one of the interesting ones like all of the Bob Lum collaborations.

The 746 I have feels amazing in hand, I bet he'd explode over a carbon fiber Lum Chinese.

It sounds like you want an ideal gentleman's knife as far as aesthetics, something interesting enough to be a conversation piece on looks alone, but also a real user's knife that hits all the modern expectations of what a 'knife' is. Maybe something more exotic than your son would be willing to spring for on his own as well.

There's a lot out there in the $100-$400 range to choose from, good luck picking one out!

Oh the Benchmade 531 with a satin blade and a silver deep carry clip or no clip at all would be a great knife to look at too, at two ounces it is a lot of knife and very suit-friendly.

The Spyderco Chaparral is gorgeous, light, and well liked too.

Everyday carry ... Looking for something custom .... I'm in New Mexico . I appreciate all the suggestions .

I second the Arno Bernard suggestion.
