Hi folks,

Both of my brother-in-laws birthdays are coming up towards the end of the month and my wife tasked me with coming up with gift ideas. They're both avid outdoorsman, so of course we're getting them knives! They both have folding hunting knives, but not much in the way of a simple (small) fixed blade. Since both of their birthdays are so close together, I can only spend $50.00 a piece on them. I tried to bend it to $60.00 a piece, but my wife is a stickler ;)! I know its tough, but I'd like to avoid knives made in China, and the more character the better.

Here are some thoughts, opinions please!

Get them each a Mora, a Fire Steel, and a copy of "Bushcraft"

Blind Horse Knives Tiger Knapp with neck sheath

Buck Woodsman

Thanks folks,

Brandon

A Mora, a Fire Steel, and a copy of "Bushcraft" ,if they're beginners :)
Otherwise - a Buck Woodsman ;)

Go with the mora, ferro and book idea, I think it's great. In fact I might steal that idea myself.

If they are experienced hunters, I would go with the Buck. They probably know what Buck is, and appreciate it. Otherwise, they might just stick the Mora in the glove box, and sit the firesteel and book on the shelf at home. I foresee them using the Buck, because it is a Buck, and they have heard of Buck before.

If it was me, I would give them the Mora, steel and book. But thats just me ;)

Silenthunter,

I had the exact same thought in response to the Mora set up. I thought that maybe with the book, they would learn to appreciate the Mora.

However, I'm leaning towards the Buck for the exact reasons you mentioned.

I'm also up for suggestions on other knives, as long as they are fixed blades.

I think if they are experienced hunters they will take a quick liking to bushcraft, I wouldn't worry about them not liking it, but you know them better than I.

I vote for the Mora/firesteel/bushcraft book idea! The question is...which Mora? :D

If they are already hunters, then a "hunting knife" is probably something they already have. I have all sorts of skinners, heavy use knives up to a Buck 119. I am just getting into bushcraft, so I will still carry the 119, but have a carbon mora in the mail to me right now. I would be happy with either of your ideas though, but to go with the buck--they may go from having 5 nice hunting knives to 6. A mora would round out their collection well. And as far as a Mora in the glovebox---thats really not a bad place for it compared to the basement, toolbox, etc.

Which Mora? I've got a 711 and a 223 on order to "evaluate" :). I would have added a 510 to the order, but they were out of stock. Opinions appreciated!

I like the 760 myself. I have the military issue one (olive drab)

I'll also vote for the mora, firesteel and book...Then let them know that they have ( or will have ) nephews or neices to teach so they need to get crackin' on learning the stuff in the book. My biL's birthday is the 18th so I think this is what he's getting too( I hate to steal your idea but it's a good one ), he already has 3 nephews ( only one is by me though).

Don't worry about stealing anything, lol. I'm sure I'm not the first to give a bare bones bushcraft kit.

You folks have a good weekend!

Brandon

I also vote for the Mora - firesteel - bushcraft book idea. THREE gifts each ..... Wait till YOUR turn comes around!

It's too bad those Condor knives aren't out yet.. they fit the budget and from what I read on the review bear wrote.. (I think bear, might be mistaken, if so I'm sorry :)) They are some kickass blades for the buck. Made purposely to fit the budget and to be put to work. not sure exactly when's the deadline, but you could maybe confirm with bear the details of their release.

Otherwise your first option "Mora, a Fire Steel, and a copy of "Bushcraft" is a VERY GENEROUS gift to start with.

How about Rat Izula's? They are $50 each and a great little blade.

Case CV

You can get an Amber bone Med Stockman (63032CV) with pinched bolsters under $50 ($43 actually)

They will own a classy knife they can pass down to the next generation (if the next generation is allowed to own knives anyway)
