My brother is going to be the best man in my wedding. He is just starting to appreciate folding knives, and can now easily distinguish a quality folder from one that isn't. I wanted to get him something durable, functional, unique, somewhat rare, and just flat out cool looking. I decided a while back that a modified Griptilian with a sprint run or first production blade would be a great choice. He isn't so much into the brightly colored and textured g10 or micarta. I know this because he has looked through tons of my knives, and always seems to like the feel of smooth black aluminum or titanium. He also seems to prefer a medium to large folder. So my choice for the scales ended up being some full size black AWT scales with a raw ti backspacer and cartridge liners. Simple, clean, and durable. I wanted something REALLY good for the blade, and some of you might think I'm a little crazy, but I bought a full size 551-1 Griptilian, and used the first production cpm 20cv drop point blade. The end result, I think, is beautiful. The scales fit PERFECTLY, and the blade is dead centered. I sanded down the washers using some 1500 and 2000 grit sandpaper, so it's smooth as butter now with zero blade play. I couldn't believe how well everything came together. It's truly a perfect knife for him I think. A local jeweler will be engraving his initials in the backspacer. Please share your thoughts and opinions! I'm very close with my brother, and I want to make sure that his first quality folding knife is something he'll love!

Very nice choice, if he understands what a nice knife then he will love it and hopefully appreciate the trouble you went to for it. What about the rest of the groomsmen? An engraved Alox SAK perhaps?

That's a good idea! I haven't thought about it yet haha! I have until September to decide. Will keep that in mind!

That's a beauty for sure and the fact that you had it made especially with him in mind is even more special.

Looks like you nailed it, that knife looks terrific. Great centering, limited edition, solid choice.

Wow! What a gorgeous knife. It came together well, and it's truly a custom from you. I'm sure he'll love it.

...if he understands what a nice knife then he will love it and hopefully appreciate the trouble you went to for it.

This is a key factor IMO. I gifted a 940 to a girlfriend of mine. Her appreciation stemmed initially from my love of the blade and grew into her own adoration, for her own reasons...and for EDC in general, which has been pretty awesome to see evolve over time. However, I've also gifted some really nice knives to 'non-knife' people with the hopes that their experience will mirror my girlfriend's...and they haven't. So I say: Stay optimistic in your brother's case, but accept whatever outcome happens. At the end of the day, you spent a lot of time thinking about him and what he'd like and your gift is awesome!! That alone should make you smile. There's more happiness in giving than receiving, IMO. :D

Congrats on the wedding to be, and second you did an amazing job on the knife selection really well thought out. You are really lucky to have a brother, and hope you and the bride have an amazing wedding.

I think that is awesome. He will appreciate the fact that you customized it for him. Great job!

fourths on best man! that's an incredible gift, that knife is downright beautiful! congrats on getting married and all, but personally i think your brothers gonna be the lucky one that day. although i'm sure your bride-to-be is lovely and no offense to her. speaking of, aren't you supposed to do bride and groom gifts? maybe you should just get her a nice small fiddleback, they're always reasonably priced:). seriously : congrats and well freakin' done!
