Gifting quality knives - keeps on giving

I've got a young-buck customer who, between hunting, guiding and assisting friends, processes a lot of game each year. 18 months ago I gave him a Bark River Fox River LT 3v knife, ironwood scales and told him to try it out for me since I haven't hunted in decades.

This is the 2nd season of him having used it, and the second time he has handed it back to me and asked me to sharpen it for him. This year he gutted 3 elk and 3 deer and skinned 2 of the elk and 1 of the deer.

It's showing some micro-chipping and the edge is rolled slightly toward the tip, nothing I can't work out quickly on my low speed 1 x 30 diamond belt assortment and then a few stokes on diamond loaded strops for scary sharp.

Last year was the same story.

My point is he's a good young guy who gets his wife and 2 small kids out hunting with him, living American culture the way I'd like to see preserved for future generations. That knife sitting in my safe brings no pleasure. Receiving it back from him, caked in blood in some spots, seeing him light up as he describes how superior it is to others he's tried brings me tremendous pleasure.
And I get to sharpen it for him and present it back to him, in unspoken gratitude for the loyalty he shows me in our business relationship.

That's win win.

There is no feeling like giving someone a quality gift that they will use and enjoy!! Just an amazing feeling!

Great story, A long while back Nathan Carothers gifted me a drop point hunter/skinner in D2.

It's been many years since I've been hunting other than vermin/rodent control and target shootin' in the yard I don't really hunt so subsequently I haven't skinned or processed any game in about 20 years myself. I don't count kitchen duty as the same type of work for a hunting knife but it was the best I could do other than lend it out to a neighbor who's a prolific hunter who takes every tag available between bow and black powder to rifle, not to mention what he traps.

The hunter deserved to be used for more than a parring knife so the beginning of every season startin' with bow I give hint the sharpened knife and he uses it to process his game and at the end of the season he brings back the knife for me to touch up the edge till next time. I had offered the knife to him before but he was always afraid it would've been lost or stolen if it was his but since it belonged to me he was even more so aware of the knife and took exceptional care of the knife while in his possession. Shared custody of a custom knife seemed to be the best compromise, he gets a sharp knife every season and I get custody the rest of the year and he gives me a cut (pun intended ;) :) ) of whatever he traps or hunts.

Like the OP said in the op,
