Gilman knife,any history?

A kid who works for me brought over a old hand made knife his Grandfather had given him, he wanted it sharpened,the blade has never seen a stone.I could tell it was pretty old.
Etched into the blade on one side is the name "GILMAN". on the other side is "#9". There is a rams head drawn on the handle and the Grandfathers initials on the other.
I searched the web but can't find anything,I did find an old Ebay add that said that Gilman was a Navy machinist who made knives shipboard during the vietnam war.But that was it heres some pics
