Idiocy like that video is why the ignorant think axes are unsafe.

A very sound point there mate. There seems to be an odd sentiment, even here on BF, that axes are inherently less safe than large knives. Honestly, given proper knowledge and experience, I think it's quite the opposite...

I just thought that I'd reference this thread, where the majority of people opted for large choppers instead of axes with a few citing knives being a "safer" tool.... normally, I wouldn't have given it so much thought, but the proposed scenario was one of only having a single edged tool - in Alaska - during winter

I hit myself in the shin once when I was much younger luckily this was before I learned how to properly sharpen anything. Its the only time I have ever hit my self with an axe. If I had been standing next to her, when she pulled the axe back and could barely hold on to it, I would have grabbed it and said "no way am I going to let you try that."
