Hi,

There are 2 girls, 19, and 22 (1 daughter and one who is like a daughter) and I was thinking about getting them each a knife. I gave my 28 yr old step daughter one many years ago and shes carried it until last year when she bought herself a SOG Flash 1 in pink! Anyway, I plan to talk to them and show them how to use it and protect themselves if necessary, putting emphasis on if necessary! I was thinking a smallish flipper type would be best, but what are your thoughts? Maybe a Kershaw 1620, or maybe even a half ton? I like Kershaw for folders as you can tell, but the point is I'm just not sure what they would like and want to carry. I'd like to keep it under the $50 range for each because I don't know if they will end in a jewelry case or what. Any ideas?

Don't assume they are going to want pink just because they are women. And don't assume they care more about "pretty" or "cute" than functionality or quality.

Beyond that....you sound like you know what a good knife is....get them one of those. Something you would proudly carry.

I would say not a Leek if it's for "protection". The handle seems pretty slick.

But a Leek would make an awesome and stylish EDC.

I bought my girlfriend a purple spyderco delica (purple is her favorite color). A few other colors available as well. It can be had for 50-60 dollars.

Why don't you just get them the same kind of knife you'd get yourself in that price range? If they can't use a knife unless it's pink they're probably just not destined to carry blades anyway.

This. Thread is pretty much done.

my wife likes my s30v blur(black) better than any other knife I own. I have a red blem blur that she does not like as much. I haven't told her the difference in blade steel, she chose the black over the red strictly on color

like marcinek said, don't assume they want color over quality -- but if you can give them both...

(personally, my fiancée wants a purp mini grip, mostly because it purple, but its also a quality knife. a bit out of your stated price range but my girls from ballymore and while I'm confident she would do significant damage with just her keys if necessary, I would feel more comfortable if she had the grip)

Here's the knife I give girls and women (and boys) that I care about, and I keep extras if they lose them. They ALWAYS love them and always carry them. This is also my own number one EDC knife, along with whatever larger one I happen to be carrying that day. It has a zillion uses. When I'm ordering other knife stuff, I always add a few of these to the order. Even if you get the girls a fancier knife, give them this ten dollar one, too...

My question is, do they like knives? In my experience if someone (male or female) isn't into knives, they aren't going to carry or use one no matter how good it looks or how well built it is. My wife, for example, has no interest in blades, and she will not carry one even if she finds it aesthetically pleasing. So before spending $100 on knives for the girls, check to see if they wouldn't rather have some other gift. Just my two cents

If you have a decent knife store around ... "Take Them Shopping". Haven't met a woman yet that doesn't like to shop.
That way they get what they want and ya'll spend some quality time together ... (hopefully) Just an idea.

And my wife like's her SAK too. Likes all the gadgets.

Good luck.

Let them pick out a knife they like. And as for defense, get them a can of pepper spray. Using a knife as a weapon should be left to those with professional training.

I got my then girlfriend/now wife a smoke purple Leek for our 5th anniversary. 5 years later and she still edc's it. She also edc's a custom engraved flower pattern SAK bought from the Victorinox factory. Occasionally for work she'll take a pink Izula.
