Wow, lots of suggestions, thanks! I like the idea of letting them shop for one! I also have several of the knives mentioned so I can show them and see what they think. I was going to do that anyway but wanted to get some ideas as well. Thanks!

1) Do they even like or want to use knives?
2) Can they maintain their knives(if not, are they willing to learn?)?
3) Are you going to provide them with training on how to defend themselves with a knife?

I find that knives make terrible gifts unless they use them and can sharpen them without you holding their hand. That said, I got my brother an 8" Shun Chef's knife along with a DMT Diamond Vee sharpener to go along with it. Even if they're men, if they're not knife people, they couldn't sharpen even with a guided system and likely won't use a knife outside of the kitchen.

What can I say? I'm a practical guy(when it's not about my own knives of course;)).

I would get them pepper spray and a kubotan(get one with an instructional DVD and let them practice on you:D). Oh, and a shark whistle is good too, though some girls can scream louder.

For light cutting tasks, I would suggest a Spyderco Ladybug, and you can toss them my phone number as well, if you like. I'm 23 and looking for love, just don't tell my girlfriend. I'm kidding, of course.

I agree with Noctis3880. I would never give anyone (girl or boy) a folder (or any knife) for SD. The odds that the knife gets them into trouble are way beyond the chances that they can protect themselves with it. The best options are pepper spray, maybe a whistle, and some training in awareness of what's going on around them.
Anyway, u could give them a knife to actually use it as a knife.
In this case, my suggestion is: talk them into it, let them use and handle a few ones, and then let them choose.
And be prepared to sharpen their knives urself

My daughter Kim dislikes the pink or brightly colored knives, calls them "too girly". Her daily carries are a black/black Camilus Heat and a Cold Steel push dagger. She also has a respectable collection of Busses, a Branton/Brend and a few customs. Of course, this is the same girl who thinks any handgun below .45 ACP is for sissies (a view I do not share, by the way.)

As they say...the apple doesnt fall far from the tree..... ;)

My girl took possession of my Benchmade 940 and hasn't left home without it for about six months now.

My girlfriend used to carry a stainless taiwanese framelock with a nailnick on the blade. She ditched that when I gave her a Leek that I had engraved with my petname for her, and she absolutely loves it. She had never used a flipper before, and now she won't carry anything unless it has a flipper. She said she didn't like her older manual-open nailnick knife because she always had to be careful when opening it because she might chip a nail.
