My girlfriend has been playing with my Cabela's minigrip for awhile now and she desperately wants an axis lock based knife. If she saves up for a couple of months, she can afford the normal axis lock, however, she could afford an Ambush right now.
Should we go with the rolling lock now or wait? How is everyone's experiences with the rolling lock? I tried to search for it, but the there's a 404 everytime I do.

regular grips in 440c are trading at what, 50-60 bucks online right now? My discretionary budget has been thinner that that before, some silly purchases on my part :footinmou

If absolutely necessary just wait for the grip, you'll love it.

Well, I actually own a mini grip in D2 and she's been playing with it, so she knows she likes the mini grip already. I really don't think she needs a knife as hardcore as a griptilian though, so I figured a mini ambush might better suit her and her budget. I'm concerned about the mini ambush's rolling lock, however.

And, let's be honest, I need a new knife to review. If she gets a minigrip in 440C I don't really have much new to work with. I want to see a red benchmade up close. If it were my money, I might do it, but I'm not going to steer her wrong.

Just another 2 cents.

I recently had a Mini-Ambush, and could not find it in me to trust that rolling lock enough to actually use it.

I have owned axis lock grips and a rolling lock ambush, and the grips are worth the extra money.

ps...maybe you might pitch in the extra?

Keep her happy and you'll be happier also!

Was that due to the reputation it got while REKAT was using it, or a problem with the current rendition by Benchmade? Just curious.

For me, It was based upon my decision only.

At the BM site, they say its one of the safest locks.

In my case, it just didnt appear to lock it very well, only a small portion of the pin locks the blade.

Loved the rest of the knife except for the thickness of the handle, was a bit too thick even without clip on it for my liking.

So, now this week i am going to purchase a 705-710 or poss 960 to replace my Mini-Ambush.

Save up another week or two and get another AXIS lock. If you need variety, get a 557 Grippy in tanto configuration.

If it is true love, grab your credit card and buy her a Ritter Mini Grip. Much cheaper than a wedding ring, she will love you long time.
The mini RSK is IMHO, well and truly worth the extra coin, a superior utility blade shape and better steel. If she only wants one folding knife, this one should be considered.

Well, the Rittergrip is pretty awesome, but a knife fan though she is, she really just doesn't need, and I doubt can appreciate, really hardcore work knives. She's more concerned with pretty and fun to open/close. There's no way she can make use of anything above 440C. Her current EDC is a Scallion with 420HC.

Now I am thinking about going with the tanto blade...she loves her some tanto....on the minigrip, of course...

I may try and talk her into a 530...I've been wanting to play with one of those...

There's enough negative feeling about the rolling lock that I'm going to avoid it until I can personally test it out. And of course, with me, a lock that makes it out of testing is one you can count on. So sooner or later, I'll buy a mini ambush to abuse. Don't need to put a weak lock in inexperienced hands. Would be bad news.

Actually, problem solved...when she finds out you can get the mini griptilian in green or purple, all bets are off. She'll almost definitely want a bright green mini grip in 440c.

Thanks guys.

Your girlfriend like knives!!!!!!!! Why is she still your girlfriend? Marry her now and buy her the axis lock of her choice. :D

Don't forget. The Ritter mini also comes in YELLOW. Buy the PSK from Doug http://www.aeromedix.com/index.php?_siteid=aeromedix&action=mfr&mfrid=dougritter

She gets the Yellow mini-ritter and you get some fun survival toys. The yellow is better looking in person than on the site, but it's not gloss. It's a matte finish. Also, and I believe this is stated on the web site, the yellow can wear off, as it's actually the black knife painted. Then she'll have a "new" black mini-ritter!! The gift that keeps on giving ; )

With regard to you playing with a new toy, let this one be about her. My guess is, after this, you'll be able to buy the knife of your choice.

My son got an Ambush, and eventually the spring would no longer draw the blade all of the way back into the handle. The store replaced it, and he's happy with the replacement.

I have several Axis lock knives, and I think the Axis is a great, reliable design, not to mention fun to play with. I would wait and save for the real Axis lock.

Interestingly, we both have a strong dislike of rainbow knives. Nonetheless, she wants an axis lock, and she already has a kershaw assisted opener, so while a Chive might be coming later, the next knife is requisitely a Benchmade. Kershaw has a pretty strong following among my friends.

She does like knives, though I doubt she'll ever unexpectedly call me to tell me that Spyderco introduced a new knife. She appreciates them, has fun flicking them, and yes, uses them. I don't think she could tell you the difference between 440A and S30V though.

She's an interesting deal. Her father has a body shop and does all the body work on my racecar. So I really get the hookup there. She appreciates cars in a similar way to knives. It can be difficult to find a girl who can appreciate four wheel drive drifting. I was taking her and my friend's girlfriend to get some electronics parts at an electronics junkyard and pulled a massively huge drift into the spot in the wet empty parking lot and my girlfriend was cheering while the other girl starting dry heaving.

Really, once she finds out it comes in either bright green or purple, there's no stopping her. She does have a tacky taste in colors....

Whoa. I'll have to show her that. I don't even remember benchmade making a purple switchback. I find the new white one rather fetching. I'm not sure she can afford this, but we'll see. Pretty cool, really. Always liked the switchback. Jeez, I don't know if I can handle her having a nicer knife than mine though.

Artfully Martial,

From your postings, it appears that your girlfriend likes the ease of opening and closing the axis. In my LIMITED experience with the rolling lock, it is not nearly as easy to hold the lock bar back and gently flick the blade opened and closed. If this is one of the reasons she likes the axis, then I would suggest you stick with it. As always, the best is to look at them both side by side and let her decide, but since these knives are not found in every hardware store this may not be possible. Again, from your description, I would suggest an axis lock and colored handle to match her desires. Best Regards, Richard

I don't believe this. Anyone else? Mine sure didn't look painted or ever wear off any.
