Give me your run down on the RESPECT

I would like to know if anyone used their Respect in the wild. If I do not get a response back in 3 days for my WTB thread for the CRK Pacific I will take the dive and get a Respect. It's the second knife I'd get currently in that size and guess what, IT IS IN STOCK. It costs $50 more than the CRK Pacific but you get more blade, a leather sheath, and a carrying case, and you can buy it right now.

Still, has anyone got one and NOT liked to carry it? Has anyone cut a fruit or something with it and it actually doesn't cut? Has anyone awled some wood and it exploded? For $400 there might be negatives. I use my Schempp Roc in Vg-10 for ruff jobs, I will do it with this too and I'm not afraid to get it dirty is need be.

edit: I'm not getting the Pacific anymore. Reeves or someone we know that's a good spokesman behind their product isn't there anymore. If that doesn't matter to you fine, but it matters to me. Spyderco Sal is still around and Eric is in charge. I will get a Respect if I get a few thumbs up here and not a something negative.

Used VashHash has one and carries it regularly. He had an issue with the first one he got but Spyderco swapped it out for him. I think he likes it a lot, and has given it some hard use including batonning.

I carry it almost daily. I wear it IWB with the stud. It carries a lot better than most would think. Easily concealed with a plain t shirt. I actually carry it this way because I've had issues with belt carry and sheaths catching on things.

All that aside I really like the knife. Yes my first one had issues. The guard came loose and I cracked the blade at the handle while batoning. Spyderco sent me a second one and I haven't had an issue yet. The tip is pretty strong. I haven't done any drilling or prying but I've stabbed wood aggressively with it. I even did some light throwing. As in just standing over wood and throwing it down into it. The tip didn't fail.
Here's a pic of the second one successfully chopping a 2x4.

Overall I would still recommend the knife. Spyderco will stand behind it.

Not sure if you're supposed to link another forum but here's the link to the original thread on the spyderco forums and Sal's response is there.

Yeah VashHash, after googling a bit I found your thread on Spyderco. It really promoted me to get the knife despite it not being full tang like the CRK Pacific. CPM154 is far more rust resistant and gets a few more cuts in cardboard and rope when tested. Sal and Spyderco also are behind their product while Reeves isn't at CRK anymore. Impressive.

I ended up getting it National Knives on eBay whose been around for 20 years at this point with 100% feedback. Came out to a bit over 400. I think I'll be satisfied. Thanks for the input and updating that thread over on the spyderco forums as to the how the warranty worked.

I think you'll really enjoy it. Be sure to post your initial thoughts and your opinion after using it for a while.

I handled the knife a bit at a show and was impressed . . . except by the handle which I find irredeemably fugly. Wonder how hard it would be to replace with something nice . . .

You could definitely find someone to cnc a new handle for you or they could go old school and carve it out. Just gotta pull those screws and it will comes off.

Will do. I have two questions that I can't find online. Can you IWB carry if you're skinny? I am but don't know if it'll fall down the back of my pants if I put it behind my hip. Second thing I can't find is how do you manage if it's in the car. Does it ride up behind the seat and when you sit can't someone from behind you grab it? Know what I mean? That was my issue with the Roc and it annoyed me so I stopped carrying it that and it RATTLED SO MUCH! I could have fixed it with a ratcheting clip and some felt though... You know maybe I will fiddle with that old guy a bit.

I plan to get someone I know that has CNC router and laser cutter he uses for wood and cut a trough so I can wrap it with string of leather to resin off. As Vash said you could easily just whittle a new handle in a shape this easy. Plus you have to admit, G-10 is a very resilient plastic that can stand up to tons of damage and heat and is easy to clean etc etc.

Kinda excited, just want to keep on about it.

This is actually the reason I ended up passing on it. I was extremely excited when the prototype showed up. It appeared to be a hidden tang with hidden pins and a sculpted G10 handle more like a combination of the Zoomer and the Darn Dao. Instead we got these huge pins and more limited contouring. I passed.

I pull my belt pretty tight so it holds the sheath up well. When you sit in a car it can ride up a little but I can't say how much for sure. That depends on the person. I'm not sure who this person behind you would be and I surely don't know how they would lift your shirt up to get the knife out from under it without you reacting. Most cars I've sat in have full length seats that cover your whole back. I usually carry mine at the 3 o'clock position. Maybe a little further back.

I don't know what your build is or how you dress. It's kinda hard to say if you can conceal it or not. People conceal pistols of all sizes so I would think with a little effort you could conceal the respect. I try not to wear tight fitting clothes so that probably helps.

This is a pic of the knife while I'm sitting.
It doesn't ride up much. I think in the car it might come up an inch but I'm not sure.

Thanks. I'll try 'er out and show you how it wears in my jeans. You're even sitting down here. That illustrates one of my questions right there. I'm as skinny as a rail and wear button down shirts or polos. Reason I got in to guns and then knives is because as an adult I'm just too damn skinny so it probably puts a target on my head despite being so tall. BTW are you still EDCing it or did you get tired of it? TBH it looks comfy enough with that leather sheath just sitting in there and not dangling and slapping on the waist and such.

I wear mine the same way but I cut the strap off. It works OK sitting in the car. That's what determined the length of the blade. I had to be able to sit down while wearing it in the car, I played with several prototypes before the final design. The handle is more function than pretty.

It is still a sweet blade... I just ended up getting a second Darn Dao instead!

It's on my side right now

Also for some kind of reference. I'm 5'11" 250lbs.

I almost always have a fixed blade on me.

What a well designed and manufactured tool. There is no Spyderco made that I want more then one of these. It might be my only purchase this year but I NEED one. Thanks for the pics!

The frog seals the deal. It's a great way to carry a large fixed blade.

I have the Respect, but haven't really used it much. I like it. The leather sheath works well, and if you want to carry it in the field there's also the option to put it in a standard 8" SpecOps sheath.

For me it's a good knife but narrowly missed out on being great. I'm not a big fan of stainless steel in a blade that size, nor of G10 handles on a fixed blade, and would prefer more contoured handles (although I appreciate that the handle is more versatile than some highly contoured bowie handles that lock you into a saber grip). A crucarta or 4Varta version would be awesome. You could probably thin the blade stock without detracting from the functionality as well.

And finally, the price is getting you up there into the territory you could get a very nice custom bowie made for you, but Spyderco fixies tend to be on the pricier side.

Hi Magician,

The Darn Dao is an excellent blade and ours is probably the only opportunity for someone to own one of Bob Lum's great design. We sat on the original for 20 years waiting for the technology to come around to be able to make it in production.

They are so gorgeous, I about broke a keyboard ordering them a few years back when they came out. I don't think it was an instant sellout, and I'm sure it's not the most profitable thing, but I am really thankful you guys made it as a sort of labor of love.
