Give me your thoughts...

The Contego was on my shortlist over the Rift. I was worried that all the gimping would be uncomfortable in my hand. Do you have one? Your thoughts on it?
I've owned a Rift, and sold it after a short while. It was a very uncomfortable knife to me in a couple ways. The area where your index finger and thumb rest when holding the knife felt very wide for a knife that size, just very awkward. Strike two was that hump/horn on the bottom, right where your pinky would naturally sit. I really tried to like that knife, I carried it, used it, and ultimately it didn't make the cut for me. If a knife is not comfortable to hold I won't keep it. Ergonomics are more important to some folks than aesthetics.

Th Contego does not have these 2 issues. But it is a larger knife. The scalloping on the G10 isn't bad at all. It has a lot of gripiness, but it's not sharp yet it is effective. I highly recommend the Contego, it's a great design and fixes the issues I had with the Rift.

don't buy the Contego until you try it, I hated mine and found it very uncomfortable in the hand, both the jimping and it's ergo bothered me, it just feels un-natural.

Now that I think about it. The best answer you'll get is from yourself. You owned both knives. You know what the pros and cons on both are. Remember which you liked best and go with that. If you think they're too big they both essentially have a "little brother" in the 707 and 940. If one of these four doesn't do it for you I would look to a de-assisted Barrage or Volli. Maybe one of the new releases like a Stryker or Hunt series.

I haven't had a 710 yet. :)

Everyone needs a 710. I don't know about it for an office though. In my office I know it'd be ok, but I don't know about yours. The 707 is perfect for an office, but the handle is pretty short and not comfortable for doing much more heavier tasks than opening packages and letters. But if you don't like the 940 handle material then you won't like the 707.

I always thought about the 943 as a medium-size carry.

I carry my 890 to my office. I think it is a good office carry because the sculpted scales look classy and it has a nice deep carry clip. A mini-dejavoo might be good for the same reason(745).

I got rid of both of my Benchmade folders but I'm missing them now. I'm thinking of a Rift again or a 710.
Good-natured ribbing here: TOLD YA SO! :D

I work in an office M-F and would like a modern knife for work and I think the 710 would work well with khakis?

I really like how much blade the 950 packs but I doubt I'd be missing it if I went with the 710. Then again maybe I should get both. ;)

Thoughts on these two knives?
I think I am going to go with the 710. I do dig the blade shape of the 950 but I like a slimmer EDC. I may not use the 710 at the office due to size. I generally carry a smaller traditional knife anyway. Not a big fan of the 940 due to price and handle material.
Honestly, if you're looking at an office environment, the 710 is not the best of choices. A 586 would fit the bill perfectly. M390 steel, small enough to be sheeple-friendly, and a classy G10/Aluminum bolstered handle. The 581 is also a good choice, just bigger (I have both.)

No one has any complaints about Benchmade's D2?
Simply put: it rocks!

The jimping can be rough on the hands, but not for office-type use. During hard use it could get a bit much, but the later generations toned down the jimping. Even then, if it's too much, sand it down to your liking. I sold my 810bk to get the 810-1401. CPM-M4 (810) or M390 with blue/black scales (810-1401 at knifeworks.com)... take your pick. However, it suffers the same drawback the 710 does for an office environ: size. If it won't be for the office, then 810(-1401) over the 710 any day of the week (and I owned a 710 from 1999 to 2009). I don't see my Contego going anywhere until the Rift comes out in a super steel.

Is the Contego any slimmer?

I think the 710 is an easier carry than my Rift and the Contego feels like you could do anything you could ever ask of a knife but I find it thinker and heavier than I like in a casual pair of pants. Of the three I would vote for the 710 but the Rift is still on heck of a knife. You really can not go wrong with either of these.
Good luck, Frank.

Another you might consider is the HK 14715. D2 blade is the same size as the Rift, flat slab scales like the 710 make it a touch thinner. No "pinky bump."

How do you guys sharpen your 710's recurve? I love the slim design but don't think I could sharpen it well, I use diamond stones then a spyderco double stuff then a strop.

Wrap a piece of PVC tube in fine grit automotive sandpaper. Using a flat stone for a curved blade isn't very easy for some folks. There are plenty of threads on how to sharpen recurves in the MTE section.

IMO these are pretty big blades you guys are recommending for an office setting. ( 3.9" ) I would prefer something a little smaller & sleeker, maybe a 530...but to each their own! :)

I'm in my office 5 days a week. My EDC rotation contains a Bradley Alias 1, BM 760, BM 730, BM 890, BM 581, BM 912, BM 913. The 912/913 are the smallest of that bunch and they are 3.6" blades IIRC.

I suppose it all boils down to personal preference. I wasn't into knives when I had an office job. (about 6+ years ago)

I'm retired from corporate and work for myself. Even so I will carry my 710 less than I do my 525BK-1101 or other favorites in the 3" +/- range. My Volli, 585-1, 530 fit the easy to use selection.

Since you have mentioned it is in Office environment wearing kahkis, I would recommend 940 over 810. Like many others have mentioned, it is sheep friendly. No matter how you slice it, 810 would not fit as office friendly knife, unless what you do in cutting 2x4 or some sort of manufacture oriented job.

Depends on jurisdictions of your office, your blade limit law is not something to mess around with if you want to keep your job :) . I would make sure your company allows to carry knife to be sure.

Let me clarify: I am not wanting an office knife per se, I was just thinking the 710 would be slim enough for the office due to khakis. I know the knife laws and have no trouble carrying a large folder for work as long as it's pocketable.

Really dig the 940 but it's priced high for what it is.
