Given the ever more superb spring-assisted flippers and thumb-studders available, do automatics still provide a real functional advantage?

I have a little bit of everything, except assisted open. I do not like them. Go full auto or nothing IMO.

I like both auto's and manuals, each are great.

As someone with high anxiety, I much prefer quickly opening and closing my knives than taking a clono.

What was said about OTF's being able to open and close quickly is why I own three. Being around my sister's 4 kids frequently, the ability to minimize the time a blade is exposed while cutting something is very important. Another thing, OTF's are more difficult to open, especially for kids, (hell even my mother has a difficulty with my Heretic Manticore E) and unlike many manual folders, if I drop an OTF the blade isn't going to come flying out.

I disagree about the reliability of OTF's as well. I have a Heretic, Brian Tighe and Friends, and a Hogue Exploit and none of them have had reliability issues, ever. I've yet to disassemble any of them, lube or anything, and the Hogue is nearly 2 years old. It's probably time I think about that. However, I store them in a dust free environment with silica gel so not as much of an issue.

OTS, I have one, a Kershaw Launch 8 in green. I love it, bought one last year for my dad in gray, and he loves it as well. Just bought a teal one for my cousin's birthday next week. Its what I carry when I go into the city along with either my SIG or my Steyr. I can open and close it one handed no problem.

I plan to pick up a Launch 13 if it ever comes in a color other than black. Maybe another Brian Tighe and Friends Twist Tighe OTF, the large if they ever make it in green. Also considering the Pro-Tech Whiskers if they ever release one in a better steel than 154CM.

I don't think auto's will be dying out anytime soon. Just like regular folders, the variety of models and manufacturers are growing, if less quickly. My hopes are the Hogue makes a smaller size OTF, and that Pro-Tech will have a D/A OTF one day.
