Giving a rescued BK2 a second chance on life

I recently won an auction on the site that we don't talk about for a "used" BK2. :D The picture was pretty dark and fuzzy, so I couldn't tell how "used" it was. I bid anyway, and got a fairly good if not great deal, especially considering that it had a Teklock attached.

Anyway, when I got it, it seemed to be more "abused" than "used."

The pommel had been pounded on with something metal:

The edge was rolled and in terrible shape, and the spine was flared from pounding with metal:

A little time on a belt sander and I had reshaped the pommel, sharpened it, and squared the spine:

I also decided to strip it, but to leave it to patina naturally. I added grip to the scales by hand sanding with 100 grit. Here it is after it's much needed TLC:

I really like it, and it fills a gap between the 9 and the 17. Plus, it's new home will be a lot better than it's last one.:)

Thanks for reading!

Nice work on the TLC. I love my 2 and EDC it. I want to piggyback an 11/14/24 on it. Any plans for scales?

MUCH better.

Try the inner tube trick on the handle for traction.

Awesome photos! How does it compare to the bk9 pound for pound at chopping and battoning? I want to carry the 9 daily but it's just to big, I live in a rural area so sheeple aren't a problem.

Thanks for sharing!

very nice... to give a neglected BK2 a good home.. i can just see the commercial now... with it all sad looking and sarah maclaughlin playing in the background....

Good on you and nice work, sir.
I've seen metal splitting wedges that weren't as drawn out as that pommel... woof. That bad boy has earned this "spa treatment".
+1 on inner tube being quite grippy. Also media blasted scales are quite high on the traction list.

Great job on the rescue. You restored the blade and made it your own. The BK2 is my favorite knife. I love it.

Thanks for the replies, everyone!

Frankly, it doesn't chop well at all--not even comparable to the 9. It batons the best of any knives that I have owned (IMO), but it isn't as long as the 9 (obviously) so it can only span about a 4 inch log if you still want room to hit the tip.

I know that I'm in the Becker Forum, but for your case, I would recommend an ESEE 6. It is much thinner and longer than the 2, and shorter and lighter than the 9. It chops better than the 2, and is longer for better batoning. However, it is fairly thin and has FFG, so it isn't up to as much abuse as the 2.

I guess that I will have to try the inner tube. I have a friend that has a sand blaster, so that may be an option as well. Thanks!

Damn fine work there. It's nice to see someone your age that not only has the sense to appreciate a good knife but can un-eff one that someone else mangled.

Nice job on that one!!! Ive actually been wanting to round off the pommel on all of my Beckers. For chopping, are you gripping the pommel with a 3 finger grip? I find the BK2 chops very well for its size if I hold it correctly.
