Giving credit where it is due.

Agreed. I can't say for certain as I haven't tested, but simple physics would seem to dictate the angle of the point and thickness of steel immediately behind it would determine piercing ability far more than any given blade shape.

I've broken a couple tantos at the tip at the bevel grind. When they put a 20 degree bevel on a tanto tip it does weaken it in my expierence.

First one I broke was a complete accident , we have these steel desks at work and I had some wires that needed to be stripped maybe quarter inch . I was choked up on the blade. actually had the tip between my thumb and index finger and the spine resting in my Palm . I was being extra careful to not cut the wire and the tip hit that desk lightly ,now when I say lightly I mean I thought nothing of it , went back to work and it never crossed my mind. Few hours later I had to strip another wire , opened the knife and saw the tip broke off.

I really like the look of the recon 1's; I just wish they would put the thumb plate on them for pocket opening.

Not sure about the new ones but the Aus8 version the thumbstud could be played with a little bit to get the studs to one side or the other.

If you try to the studs can catch your pocket and wave it open.

Hell I'd probably just grind in hook.

Very interesting,, never thought they would be so similar.

Honestly, even with all the talk about lock failure, I still really want a Roadhouse. I personally think it's the most attractive design from Emerson

My roadhouses are the best example of what an emerson can or should be. The lockup is better on them than the other 10+ emersons I have .

I've had a few of the regular roadhouses a few years ago and I'm just going off memory here, but seems like the desert ones they just got it right across the board.

I've owned probably 50 emersons. I've had one knife fail on me one time and it was a brand new horseman back in 2011-2012 . Knife was brand new snd it failed and closed on my hand. Emerson replaced the knife. Other than that never had a failure and I use my knives.

Well, that could be tactical. I'd need to think about it for a while. lol
Coincidentally, I am a fan of the traditional and Americanized tanto. I own a whole bunch of knives with a tanto blade and have never found them lacking or felt I was unable to cut, scrape, or anything else. I think some people just get it into their mind and they decide that it's not for them, because it's too gimmicky or whatever. It doesn't get any easier to sharpen either.
I agree about getting it in to ones head that they are gimmicky. I used to be one of those people. I learned as a kid from the men in my family, to look at blades, with the point of view, of how well it would fill the role of a hunting knife. For me, I got converted when I came across a Tanto, at such a cheap price for what I was getting, I thought WTH. And my horizons were broadened because of it.

I have seen Charlie Mike use the term "urban bushcraft" on these boards before. I have to say, that a folding American Tanto is a great "urban bushcraft" knife.

Never thought I'd like a tanto blade, but one of my favorite knives, Mcusta, only came that way. Had to try one......VERY useful blade shape! Looks pretty cool too!![/IMG]

I never thought I'd like tantos either, but the Mcusta Katana has been calling my name for a while now....

I used to not care for the tanto shape till I got a Blur for cheap a few years ago.
It is very useful and for me the tanto is the easiest type blade to sharpen.

I've got a tanto Recon 1 XL and it is a beast, just a bit too big for edc though but I just snagged a 4" version of the exchange and that should be a perfect size.

That's what got me started bro!!!
This bad boy!! This tanto is very thin behind the edge and slices like a beast!!
