giving up smoking and my mind is playing tricks on me

Keep it up , guitarted, you should be on day 21 now and getting easier. I'm on my 9th month now, still have a urge about once or twice a week but it only last a few minutes. I'm walking a mile a day and lifting weights. Believe me, I am a lot more healthier than I've been in years and am glad I don't smell like smoke everywhere I go. Be proud and don't give up!

Has anyone here given up smoking?

I am on day 2 at the moment and some of the mental tricks my nicotine addiction is playing on my mind are these arguments:

1- My brain says that I will be a boring person.
2- Its your one of the few pleasures in life. Why give up?
3- You will go back to it? why not have one now?
4- You will gain pounds and stones. You will be a fatty.
5- great, just what we need, another health freak, playing it safe.

What mental attitude should i take to combat these thoughts? What are the benefits of giving up smoking?

I try to fight smoking many times and never won. I smoked about 20 cigarets a day. Then I just decide that I am not smoking any more, like push the swithc off and after that has no problem at all. This thoughts did not came to my mind any more because it was switched off. If you have this thought - hard to fight, better try to cancel this thoughts before they came to clear form in sentaces as you described, I jam this thought with this strong statement - "I AM NOT SMOKING"- right before they was able to came to me as communists jam Voice of America in 80th.

I had no problem with somebody smoking in my presence etc. Because I was not fighting myself, I was not convincing myself - I just not smoking any more and that's it.

Hope it will help. I am not smoking for 12 years and counting. I did smoke one or two cigars from that time but stoped it eather - no fun nothing.

I gaind a little of weight because my body came more healthi - it was gone pretty soon, but I am able to run for much longer and do other stuff.

Thanks, Vassili.

I've never smoked, but I've known enough people that have, and have quit.
All I can say is:

Stay strong and good luck.

YUP, I am on day 20 :D soon, the one month block will be broken.

One thing I found helpful was to learn to breth correctly. It really helps:)

Keep up the good work guitarted!! Wahoooo!! You are doing great!! One day at a time!

You are very welcome!! I remember what it was like to quit smoking!! I do try to be helpful.

guitarted,
Congratulations! 20 days into a hopefully better way to live.
Another suggestion, if you have any clothing in the closet that still smells like tobacco smoke, washing or having cleaned to remove the smell is well worth it. Hate to suggest the expense but if you have drapes or furniture in your living accomodations, it might be worth having them cleaned to remove as much smell of the tobacco as possible.....
Also personally, I had to ask family that still smoked to please not smoke in our home from the time I quit onward......there were some pretty strong urges to lightup at first...as if you don't know that.... and now if we go somewhere someone smokes, when we get home its time to wash or have cleaned eveerything we had on and to shower....
Also, it is said you can gain up to 100 lbs. and still be healthier than if you continued to smoke. ( I tested that theory...so far its not been shown wrong)
I also quit coffee for a while when I first started being smoke-free....to me coffeeandcigarette was all one word......yeah and alcoholicbeverageandcigarette was also.....but there are limits to what you stop at the same time (smile).
You are on DAY 20.....THAT IS AWESOME!
