My wife seems to believe that superstition that if you give a knife, you sever the friendship. I say B.S.

I am heading for a canoe camping trip this weekend, and one friend is knifeless, while I can't decide which get to make the trip. I would like to give him one, but can't decide. I think the Spyderco Tenacious would be a good choice, but then I have to buy myself another. I have a SOG Topo Meridian that I never use, but that's because I hate it, so I am not sure I want to give a knife that I hate (that might be bad mojo). I also have a pristine Benchmade Nimravus Cub, but it is an unused Shot Show Prototype that may have some value in its condition. What would you guys recommend?

I would give the Tenacious a great knife that is inexpensive to replace.

Include a copper coin(penny) with whatever you decide to give so the receiver can "pay" you for the knife.

Some people say that he should give you a penny, so that technically you did not give it to him and the bad luck is erased.

Like you, I think that it is silly superstition.

As to which knife, just because you hate one does not mean that he would. Unless it has detrimental or dangerous features, give him the SOG.

I have given knives as gifts, and it solidifies friendships, not severs them. However, it would be best to not tell your wife she is wrong. Do not die on that hill, not worth it.:o

I hear what you are saying about giving away a knife you don't like, but I would view it more as "if I don't like it, why would I pawn it off on someone else". If you are not superstitious then Bad Mojo shouldn't factor in.

Why not take both, let him try them out, and keep the one he prefers.

You are giving your friend *man`s oldest tool*, which in and of itself carries a lot of weight in my book....a MUCH more significant gift than say, a pen & pencil set....

giving a knife is bad luck? huh? everyone i have given knives to is VERY appreciative of the gift of a sharp tool. In fact it has turned them from viewing knives as murder weapons to viewing them as tools.

hardly bad luck.

You could always buy him a nice cheap starter knife as well if you like your Tenacious. I could recommend a Kershaw Leek or even a Byrd Cara Cara for even less. Both are quality knives and I know they got me started on knife collecting and enjoyment.

I gave a knife to each one of my groom's men and my best man at my wedding. Classic Buck folder's, one of my favorites and good quality knives. The funny thing is I never got a new one, I wanted to get me one too, but the budget was too tight. Not that I don't own 3 already lol...

in jewish tradition if you give someone a knife as a gift you have to tape a penny to it and then once you've given them the knife they give you the penny back, that way its more that they're Paying you for the knife so as not to sever the friendship.

Cheers!

Update- my friend came over last night, and I showed him both knives. He liked the SOG, so I gave him that one. He liked the assisted opening feature, and the lock-back design. Liner locks scare him. Worked out well- I thinned the heard, made a friend happy, and I still have my Tenacious.

I guess I have severed a lot of friendships, and will continue to do so! I never heard that one before.

Good to hear it all worked out. Enjoy your camping trip.
