Gladius Leather Sheath???

Hey everyone, I have a CG Gladius showing up at my front door soon, am freakin pumped, but I am looking for a sheath. I have heard that kydex can mess with the finish on the blade, so I thought a leather sheath might be cool looking and easy on the finish of the blade. I called armorall leather and I guess they haven't ever made a Gladius sheath, and I would have to send it in, which I am a little hesitant to do right off the bat. Any recommendations for smiths that have made a leather sheath for Gladius?

The only sheaths for a Gladius I know of at the moment are Buy Browns. If you e-mail Chuck from Chuddybear leather he might be getting one in but I don't know. But at the moment, Gladius sheaths are slim pickins.

Oh, leather can mess a finish up too, the leather will smooth out the coating. Just FYI.

The various sheathmakers do not get knives in advance from Busse, to have sheaths ready when the knife finally hits the market. The sheathmaker either has to invest in a blade himself, or make the sheath off of a blade that the buyer sends in. Given the price of a Gladius, it might not make sense for a maker to invest in one himself, unless he believes he can make and sell enough sheaths to amortize the cost of the sword. If you have been on this forum for a bit, you know that Dwayne is absolutely reliable, but I can understand that you might not want to give up the cool sword you just received.

The other leatherworkers here will chime in, you may get lucky.

I have a pile of Gladius's coming soon. I am working on a design right now for a cool leather sheath. I'll post it when it's done of course!

Thanks for the advice. I never thought about leather messing up the finish of the cg coating. I figured that the metal snap on the inside rivet could scratch it. I am a busse noob and new to this forum i have to admit. I have been collecting guns for the last few years and did not even know about these knives im sad to say until i was looking up survival knife reviews, so now my new obsession is busse after reading about the following, durability, and fact that they almost always go up in value. I am prob not going to hack down trees with the gladius for a while at least, just in case i need some money and would have to sell it, i would like to keep it in pristine cond. ill buy a bushwacker in a month or two. I bought an ak-47 on ebay and am going to get a leather sheath with rattlesnake accent from dwayne (ill post pics in a few months) but ill take your advice and shop around on this forum for the glad. Do you guys know why there is such little data on the gladius (bussecollector.com) doesnt have anything, nor does the rest of the net. is it going to be available in a few months for mass production on busse combat.com? Why is there such a price diff. between CG and LE ( $597 vs $1800 at blade show?)) Thanks for all the help seriously, everyone on this forum rocks

Just saw your reply Whiskey River. Thats cool, are you going to make the sheaths with belt mount/dangler only, or the option of shoulder strap too???

Hi

As has been said we sheath makers do need to buy the knives & wait just like everyone else.

**now for a little somewhat off topic talk**

I make the trip every year to Blade to buy the knives to make sheaths with and this year drove/rode to Knob Creek, so that you do not have to send yours in, sometimes passing buy knives I would love to collect because I can only afford so many knives.

But the main reason I buy Busse, Swamp Rat, Scrap Yard knives, is that I am a HOG, a Fan, a Collector, or whatever else you may call me :D. I collect/buy these knives because I believe in the product and the people, & especially Jerry. I call him my friend along with all the others I have met on this journey.

I have beat on these things & they do everything that Jerry says they will, & he stands behind his product 110% So even if I did not make sheaths I would buy these knives. I like a guy that does that, & his influence is why I do the same, my sheaths and holsters are guaranteed for life.

**somewhat off topic done :D **

As far as the finish, any sheath, I repeat any sheath could mar the finish if you shove the knife in & out of it enough, even the cardboard.
If I were to make the sheath loose enough as to never touch the finish the blade rattles around in the sheath & no one wants that.

If you want it to remain in mint/new condition please leave it in the safe, & do not use it.

I use tape on all my molding knives & the finish is un-marred on my own personal knives that I only use for sheath making, my users are a different story, but it is not the sheaths marring the finish ;)

I can not guarantee if you shove the knife in & out of the sheath & use it that there will be no rubbing, no one can.

I sincerely hope this helps & has been a little informative. I did not mean to rant just to explain because I am not sure if people know how it works.

David

I appreciate it David. I am new to Busse knives and want to hack away but would rather start out with a bushwacker or something a little less collectable to abuse until my finances pick up a little bit. I know it sounds dumb but these blades seem to be made for a "nuclear meltdown" scenario, so my personality would tend to keep these more expensive blades in pristine condition, just in case the ship hit the sand. If I had to chop a tree down camping, I would prob use a $30 ax. I know alot of ppl dont agree, but I am really ocd about my nicer guns/knives and keeping them in as good of condition as possible in case i really need it for chopping down a tree/ cutting a cinderblock. I am probably going to keep the blades in a safe for the most part. I have never seen any of my knives damaged by leather sheaths visually. Do you thing the coating on the CG blades shows more scuffing than the Satin blades? Also, just to pick your brain, should I as a novice attempt to convex grind my blades? maybe start out with a cheap knife?

I am not sure if I'll do a dnagler or Only a Shoulder Strap! I am leaning toward a shoulder strap only, as that appears to be how most Roman Soldiers wore theirs. Of course anything is possible!

On a side note, you should change your settings so people can email or at least send you private messages.

Enjoy the Busse Forum!! Here you will find tons of good info and a lot of very good people!

Ahmm..maybe i got my sheath terminology wrong here, what is the shoulder strap?

Because Roman soldiers had to wear their gladius on the right side (sword arm) on the hip (in order not to cut by accident the soldier next to them). Just saying this because you said you are leaning toward Roman carry and going with shoulder strap.

The pictures of sheaths/scabbards for the Gladius's I have seen on the web have all had attachments for a strap that would let the sword be carried hanging it across the shoulder. I'll go find some more pics and see.... I could be wrong obviously. :-)

Like these, it seems they were worn with a Baldric.... (shoulder strap).. BUT... also may have been worn on a belt as well. Several options... here are some pics, one original! ha ha

I just joined this forum, am trying to enable all of my settings to allow to get private messages, bear with me, thanks Whiskey R. Its my fault on sheath terminology, i need to look up the proper name. On the armorall leather site it shows an ak sheath with the "guard keeper" strap, thats what they call it. If you order the big hoss package, it allows you to carry it low, med, or high on the belt, and comes with this removable strap. If i were buying a sheath, i would pay extra for the options of multi carry, just me, that strap would come in handy for carrying it on your back if you were climbing steep grade and didnt want your sheath banging around. Keep me posted on your sheath progress, i am really interested in getting a gladius leather sheath, i think it would be more fitting than kydex just bc the gladius looks ancient and low-tech in shape

This is the shoulder strap that can be removed:

This is the option with the dangler

Yep, my bad, as I said my terminology was wrong, while it was worn on the hip it was secured with a shoulder strap. I thought you meant behind back carry.

It might have been also secured to the belt (with shoulder strap still in place), but for all intends and purposes I was wrong and you are correct.

I have Rainwalker making me some Leather. He has the gladius in house too:thumbup:

Jeff, also has a lot of experience with sheaths for swords:cool:

Highly recommended:)

those are all cool pics. I think whatever sheaths are available for this sword, there should be some custom option for the arm/ shoulder strap, and it should be removable> I could see there being different scenarios where you would want to carry it under arm or on back, like if you had a pistol holstered or you were climbing and needed good leg mobility. This might be stupid, but what do you think about a double companion sheath for an AK and Gladius combo, with the gladius riding on top of the Ak. I know its going far, but if you could make the sheaths tie together as companion, or untie them to make them separate with a dangler and removable shoulderstrap, i think you would have the ultimate sheath in regards to a flexible and modular design. what do you guys think??? Armorall leather also makes kydex reinforced leather sheaths which is supposed to be strong as hell and has the classic look of leather
