Has anyone ever thought about having HI make a Gladius Sword? I want one because I think they look cool but would also like to be able to chop things up with it. Most of the swords that I find on the internet look cheap and not made for real use.

Yep, the HI kamis should be more than up to making a gladius with that Nepalese flair if given some good designs. Not sure how effective it'll be for chopping though, at least compared to a khuk.

I am sure that the people from HI could do a pretty good to a very good job, and they would likely be willing.

On the other hand, why not ask a custom swordsmith here in the US? For example, I am less than 200 miles from you, probably. You could get certain quality and any sorts of embellishments (pattern welding, hamon, etc). There was a gathering of over 200 swordsmiths in Ashokan, NY last year. All of us were from US, Canada, and Europe, though we make swords of several Asian types, also.

just a thought.

HI's Dukti sword has been mentioned to be sorta similar to a Gladius.

The Dukti is the fifth one from the left:

(L=>R) 30" Sirupati, 25" Kobra, Der Hauswher, Bhutan Swd, Dukti Swd, Mini Tarwar, Tarwar-Vx2, Short Tibetan Swd

I have a Manjushree and it looks quite a bit like a gladius. I don't have any real idea other than a resemblance because I don't know exactly what defines a gladius. They clearly can make that style, though. I don't think it would be that great for chopping in the sense of using it as a khuk or machete. Hacking off the arm of a Mongol? Definately!

could i get a pic with some measurements. i would like to see how wide the fullers are and the middle high ridge.
thanks

I don't have any pictures of mine, but if you search manjushree there are a few good links and pictures and details.

i searched all i could, found some specs, but not the ones i wanted
but was hoping i could get a tape measure in the pics.

i tried to ask Yangdu about buying one, but she made it seem like it was a no go on buying it or having one made

thanks

I wonder how much variation there was in the specs for the gladius back in Roman times.

I also wonder how a centurion would react to one of his legionaires chopping wood with his gladius. It might not be pretty.

This strikes me as being in poor taste, here in the Cantina hosted by Yangdu.

There was quite a bit of variation over time. And that centurion would probably have attacked him with the ax he should have used. :)

The Crow is an awesome short sword, if you can find one. But thick and strong enough for chopping. ;)
