Glass-blasted Micarta

I searched the threads and could only find a brief mention of someone that sent their micarta knife for a spa and their initial thoughts on it.

Who out there can tell me their experience with glass-blasted micarta scales, and especially how you believe it compares to the regular micarta versions? I think it’s even more relevant to share some experiences since glass-blasted micarta knives are being offered by dealers now pretty often. At this moment, there are quite a few micarta inkosis and micarta sebenzas that you can buy at dealers that are glass-blasted. I’m assuming that these knives have all been glass-blasted by CRK after the scales were added, but please correct me if I have no idea what I’m talking about, and if the glass-blasted micarta is only possible if you send your micarta knife in for a spa.

Where do you see glass blasted titanium with micarta inlays? I thought glass blasting was reserved for wood inlaid versions and special orders?

My Sebenza 31 in black micarta is glass blasted. I don't think there is any difference in the micarta but the titanium is very smooth and hides snail trails very well.

I always forget who I can share. Just Google “glass blasted micarta” and you will see some. If you were to go through the dealer list for CRK you will find a bunch. You’ll know you found one if it’s a small
micarta for 575 or a large for 650.

I thought that was the case as well, that the slabs are blasted; but that this would be done before the inlays are applied.

Interesting. But if you send it in, they will absolutely glass blast the scales. I might just have to ask them what the case is for new knives.

My guess is that from the factory it would be blasted before the inlay is installed. To me that makes more sense from a production standpoint. I imagine they just grab a glass blasted handle from the pile and put micarta in instead of normally the wood or more premium inlays. Of course you can ask and get a definitive answer.

What’s interesting too is that a glass blasted micarta is the same price as a wood inlay which is glass blasted.

You're probably right, and in that case, I'm not sure I see the purpose of paying for the glass blast from the dealer. I'd rather get a sand blasted one, and then glass blast it later to see what happens to the micarta.

pardon my ignorance, but what does glass blasting micarta do? i recently found out u kinda have to rough up micarta to even make it carriable or grippy

So, I'm the village idiot. I know nothing, so I'm just lobbing this out there. Wouldn't they just cover the inlay and glass blast the titanium?
I don't think so because they will sandblast the micarta when you send it in. This is why they moved to glass blasting for all wood inlays - because you can't blast wood handles after the fact. I'll try and find the thread where one lone person gave their brief review so that you all don't think I'm crazy.

They don’t “glass blast” the micarta, they glass blast the titanium scales. I’ve sent in several micarta inlay knives to get blasted. Glass blast titanium is smoother, that’s all.

When your micarta inlay goes in for a spa treatment, they remove the inlays and blast the titanium. Then put the micarta inlays back on with new 3M tape. It’s not that hard to figure out. 🤣🤦‍♂️

So, back to the original topic. Who has experience with glass-blasted micarta, and have you found a preference? Have you noticed it to be only aesthetic (more shiny per the mothership - but maybe the man standing next to Tim Reeve doesn't know what he's talking about), or is the scale different in hand as well?
