Glass Breaker on RC-3MIL

The 5 is my vehicle knife. I feel sure I can pry open a door and break glass with it to extract a victim.

adam04,

Can you post this up on our RAT Facebook page and can we have permission to use this on the main web site?

I can post it to FB later, or you’re welcome to.

Seriously? Absolutely, you’re free to any of my stuff for ESEE use.

Thank you sir!

No, thank YOU. All of you. Jeff, Mike, the mods. I appreciate all of you. Thanks for the pass around. My review will otherwise be a little different than the standard. Kind of ESEE-5 101 maybe. We've seen it will perform in the outdoors, but I need more info on the knife itself before I buy it to get it out there. Hope to answer a lot of the FAQ about the knife and make a good resource for others that have a lot of the same questions.

As a side note USMS SOG carries the 3-MIL and have tested the glass breaker. What we found is the point will dull after a few breaks and you need to hone it back sharp to make it glide through glass. Reason for this is the point is heat treated the same as the blade (aorund 57 Rc.). Glass is MUCH harder so it will naturally dull the point after a couple of breaks. We could have made an insert but that would increase the cost so we stuck with what we have. How many of us have to break glass anyway, and if we do, it's usually a one-time affair then the point can be touched up.

Same on the 5. Now the 5 probably has the mass that even a blunted point would break it easily. The door off this car had the window tint melted to the inside, it wouldn’t peel off. I remember seeing on an episode of COPS years ago an office took his ASP baton and smacked a window, the glass shattered, but fell in one piece because the windows were tinted. I expected something similar here. I hit the corner where I did because 1) if someone were in the car they wouldn’t get a face full of glass and 2) the window is always supported there, even if the window is rolled part way down.

The vid shows it pretty well, but the entire window shattered with light impact. If I had hit someone with my fist like that, they probably wouldn’t have even said “ouch”. You can see I kind of had a weird body position in the video when I hit the window. That’s because at first I was really going to whack it, then mid swing I thought “well I might not have to hit it that hard to break it” and I didn’t. No point in throwing glass on someone in a vehicle accident (especially like a kid in a car seat) if we don’t have to.

For the longest time i carried a Fallkniven A1 in my Jeep (long before ESEE and the -5). I have since taken it out, but I might have to put it back in for just this reason. A quarter-inch of steel can do some pretty good prying, and it is long enough to get a good whack on a window if need be. The problem with anything the size of a -5 or the A1 is it is really difficult to "stash" in my Jeep. I have to drive into and out of controlled areas, and sometimes get searched (twice with a dog just last month).

Jeff, not sure if it's hit facebook yet, but if you want to link my vid to facebook go for it. I wasn't sure if it would remove the link/post if I "re-deactivated" my account after posting it. Again, youre free to use/link/post/modify the vid however you want.
