Hi

A couple of guys have suggested a glass platen really improves this otherwise basic sander. But how do you do it? What kind of glass? How do you attach it? Details please!

Thanks

Steve

Go to USA knifemaker. Glass platen liner. Throw away the old platen. Get a piece of 2"x3" 1/4" angle. I'll take pictures tomorrow and post them.

When I was using a Craftsman 2x42 I got one of the glass platens that was the same size of the existing platen(2"x6" IIRC) and used JB Weld to attach it.

This is what I did as well. Got mine from USA Knifemaker also. I drilled a few holes in the bottom corners of the factory one, put on some bolts (from the back) with square nuts (on the front) that were thinner than the glass I was going to install. This gave the glass something to rest against for added security. I didn't trust the JB Weld to hold between the glass and factory platen alone.

Make sure to radius the edges of the glass a bit for less acute plunges.

I dovetailed mine in place. I managed to cut angled sides with a diamond cut off disk in a dremel

Hawk45, I have never used a glass platen but am building a second grinder and want to make one. How do you chamfer the edge of the glass? Can you just hit the edge with a slack belt and a 220 grit belt? thanks, Larry Lehman

Craftsman 2x42 here, I made a few platens (a 2nd for 1 inch belts) and used JB Weld and ceramic tile, the thin wall kind. Made about 10 knives and it seems to work perfectly.

I originally bought a glass platen from one of the knife supplies. I jb welded them as previously mentioned. I have the same grinder as you for now, until I can afford a KMG.

I found those glass platen a little on the fragile side.
I went to my local Lowes, I ended up getting what looks like polished granite back splash tiles, real close to the dimensions of my platen, for a couple bucks a piece. More duarable at a fraction of the cost of the glass platen.
