I guess it is a good idea to put glass on the original factory platen. It looks like a flimsy platen.

I looked at some threads here on BF, but I am still confused: Do you JB Weld the glass directly to the original platen, or do you bolt on a steel plate onto the platen, and then glue your glass to the added steel plate?

Thanks.

JB Weld, but not the quick set stuff. Quick set stuff looses it's bond at a much lower temp. The normal setting time JB Weld is good to about 600 degrees (from what I remember). My glass uses the normal JB Weld w/out problems

I JB welded a piece of ceramic tile to my stock platen, but frankly it sucks. I just got a piece of 2x3 1/4" angle and a piece of usaknifemaker's ceramic glass. Should be a big upgrade. I'm planing on using double sided carpet tape for mine though.

I would be interested to know how the double sided tape works.

The carpet tape probably won't work. The adhesive melts at a pretty low temp. I tried using it on a jig for grinding and the piece started moving after some heat built up and wouldn't stay in place.

I believe USA Knifemaker used to have something on their site about attaching it specifically to the 2x42 (at least I think that's where I remember seeing the tutorial in the section he sells the platen). I followed those instructions and put two self tapping screws at the bottom of the platen for it to sit on but it's done right on the platen that comes with the 2x42. Theory being IF it ever came lose the screws would hold it somewhat in place because of the belt against it, rather than is just sliding down and acting like an IED if it comes off.

I ordered the platen from tracy at usakm and love it. If you click on my signature.I have a video on the mods I did to my 2x42.

Btw has anyone ever ran 1x42 belts for sharpening?
