For reliability, practicality, accuracy, and value, which .45 would you rather have- the Glock 21 or an M1911 (any make), and why?

The way I see it, the Glock is lighter, has less moving parts (less to go wrong), and can probably resist corrosion better. The M1911 is a beautiful piece of Americana, and it seems very heavy-duty. This is going under consideration for carry in the far distant future, and bulkiness isn't an issue (otherwise I wouldn't be looking at standard .45's).

I like glocks but in a 45 I would go for a Para Ordinance P14. High capacity plus a 1911 ya just cant beat it. Second choice of a 1911 would be a Kimber Desert Warrior. I personally will stick with my Springfield XD Tactical 45.

I have both. Answer is whichever will make you practice more...
Some complain the 21 is to blocky, hence the GAP.

I voted 1911 for me, but for you I'd say whichever fits your hand better. Most people find the G21's grip too big to hold and shoot comfortably. Many people think the 1911's grip is a poor fit too. Go with what works for you.

The new Taurus 1911 in .45.

It has received rave reviews in several magazines, and it has many custom features already installed, so yo udon't need to spend a bunch customizing it.

Street price is around $500.

Several guys have 'em at work, and they perform better than the high end Kimbers, ect.

I currently have one on order. They are hard to get here due to the popularity.

Really? I just bought a S&W M&P in .40 so I have to wait 30 days. I have kimbers...just as good you say? I have not held them yet so I def must investigate. Do they have many diff models out? Thanks.

I have the new Taurus 1911 and it is really good but it is a little rough around the edes. It is the best 1911 for the price right now and I highly recommed it. I have a H&K USP and it is also a very very good gun. You can carry it cocked and locked. It seems to feed just about anything I can cram down its throat. The light rail is not the stardard rail and requires a spcial light (M2) or an adapter. I opted for the adapter. I carried one for 2 yrs and fired at least 2000 rounds through it. I never had a problem that made me not want to carry it.

I owned a G21, and sold it. I have 3 Kimber 1911s. I guess that pretty much tells you which I'd pick.

The G21 was an OK pistol, but it is very bulky. The 1911 actually carries well because it is thin. I can easily wear it with shorts and a t-shirt. I also had a USP40, but I sold it as well. Again, an OK pistol but it never really thrilled me.

I vote for the 1911. Actually, I carry a Colt Officers ACP. If I had to buy another one to carry it would be a Colt Combat Commander, unless I suddenly got rich and could spring for a Les Baer or a Wilson or something like that. I like Kimbers and Springfield Armorys.

Would a gun shop let me handle and possibly fire any of these guns? I'm 18 and in Massachusetts (:().

The more I see the USP, the more I like it. The double and single action options, ability to lock it with the hammer cocked, and the mag release are all pretty tempting. As Spark said, it seems like it's close to a 1911 with a polymer body. A little less soul, but maybe a little more practical. I'm not bothered by the price...it's not like I don't have plenty of time to save up.

Good luck on the test firing. I would take a USP over a single stack 1911 anyday. I currently carry a SIG but I would rate the USP as second best or equal.

The ergonomics of the M1911 are quite good for me with the wrap around grip. The thumb safety is very quick and I think the 5 inch model is well balanced. Factory sights are quite adequate.

It is said that a friction finish (such as skateboard tape) on the front and the back of the grip is what provides a secure hold not the side panels.I never felt I had a good grip on my army issued 1911.

Also the report is not so loud compared to other cartridges. I like that.

If you're not buying this as a dedicated carry peice right now then you might consider a different cartridge than the .45ACP. With any centerfire pistol the cost of ammo will exceed the cost of the gun fairly quickly if you shoot it much. You can shoot 9mm for about half the cost of .45ACP, which makes it a lot cheaper to practice and thats exactly what you need to do with it if you want to carry.
I personally don't find that there is much difference in recoil between 9mm and .45 out of a full sized pistol, if you can shoot one well you can shoot the other well too.
.45 only gains about 25% muzzle energy over 9mm too, so if someone wants to tell you that 9mm is "anemic" they must carry .460 or .500 S&W  :D The truth is that none of the common chamberings for carry guns are really all that powerful. None of them will make up for poor shot placement.
I think every serious shooter has a 9mm regardless of what they carry. Every serious shooter has a .22 also :D I'd base my purchase on what I can shoot and practice with now rather than what I might carry in the long run.

I have never found any difference between the 45acp and 40S&W on woodchucks, feral dogs etc. I've used the 40 for almost 15 years and it's never failed me .The 40 will give you a bigger selection of guns .I prefer H&K.

I have a P12 & P14 with the 14+2 factory mags. I really like Glocks in general but they just do not fit my hand. I carried the P12 for 7 years while living in Atlanta. I carried it everywhere that did not have metal detectors and it was never noticed. Worth every penny spent for it. The P14 mags also fit the P12 if needed.
