If you want a gun with REAL "stopping power" get yourself a Glock 10mm model 20, and load it up with Winchester Silvertips or Federal 125 gr. hollowpoints.

Also, the all-steel Colt Combat Commander is an excellent choice in a .45.

Very true or a EAA Witness 10mm they both hold 15rds. I have both and they are great. Glock 20 is the best Glock ever made.

While my experience with Glocks is rather limited, I've had the chance to spend plenty of time with the Full sized USP in .45. The grip isn't huge- it fits my medium sized hands well, while holding more than a 1911. The angle of the grip is very pointable, and lines up naturally. The mag release is easy to access, but won't accidentally get pushed because of the way the trigger gaurd flares. It's very easy to strip and assemble for cleaning. One thing to keep in mind is that this is not a light pistol. If you're going to be carrying it, be prepared for plenty of weight. Other than the weight, there's the price, but other than that, I have yet to have a problem with it, and neither has the owner.

Nice to know I'm not the only maniac using the ultimate handheld powertool :D
With a Plus 2 floorplate on a pre-ban mag and one in the chamber, that is 18 rounds on tap. If that won't settle matters, you need to call in an air strike ;)

Les Baers, on the other hand, are known for being so tightly fit that they require a break in period before the action can be worked by hand.
A gun that's fit too tightly is more prone to jams.
My TR ran with loads that tripped the chrono at a very sedate 750fps (give or take a few) That was brand new out of the box. I used Wilson oil on the rails and Wilson grease on the barrel. Never an issue, never a FTF OR FTE. The gun was sent to Tripp Research by my buddy (who now owns it) and had the matte HC done. Makes a beautiful gun even more so and runs even smother than before (if that's possible) The gun now has in the range of 15K rds down the barrel and still zero play vert. or horiz. in the slide to frame fit. Good 1911's cost money. Just the nature of the beast with these things. HK's are not cheap either. Both are excellent guns and if it boiled down to picking one, I'd be stumped.

if you can get that big-old grip to fit your hand.. no 1911 style can be as reliable.. esspecialy with hollowpoints. pluss you can buy two for what it would cost for a good 1911

hope this helps

As an owner of two Glocks #35-.40 & #36-.45,along with a few Colts 1911s -.45 & .38 Super.
My advice is to handle & shoot what YOU feel most proficent with.
The CCW in use(BY ME) these days, the Glock 36.

As much as I really want to get a gun and start going to the range, at least not having a gun right now is making me do a lot of reading and watching. I've been watching videos on good handling and aiming techniques (like keeping your finger off the trigger, hands higher up along the bore line for stability, the gun is always loaded/anything it's pointed at better be something you want shot, getting both hands on the grip before your arms are fully extended, and drawing the gun back toward yourself instead of letting it drop to your sides and swing after shooting).

I'm also getting more time to choose carefully. Right now I'm about 80% set on the HK USP, but with the 1911 still very much in the back of my mind. It's like choosing between a Buck 110, the solid classic, and a similarly priced newer knife like the Spyderco Native, which uses less stylish and expensive materials, but has some practical advantages. I can't decide if I want a full-sized USP or a compact, but I'm leaning toward the full-size. I need to make up for all of the guns that other people aren't carrying with a full-sized .45! ;)

Well, I finally got to see some of the guns I'm looking at in person! My two favorites at the moment are the Sig Sauer p229 and of course the 1911. It's funny how different knives and guns look and feel than you expect- they're always smaller and seem to be more polished and fit together better than pictures suggest. The real surprise was how heavy that 229 is! I like that it has a decocking lever, a trigger safety with no manual safeties, and that it's small. Plus .40 S&W seems like a good cartridge and I can fit 13 (12+1) in the Sig.

The 1911 was breathtaking. It's thinner and smaller than I expected, but still big, weighty, and quality. I checked out a Kimber Custom II and a Smith and Wesson. Honestly, the Smith and Wesson felt a little nicer, but the Kimber seems to be more popular. My two reservations about the 1911 are its length and the fact that I have to buy a "clone" because 1911s/1991s from Colt are few and far between. I'd rather support the original company, but what to do when you can find plentiful, in many cases better guns than the original?

Tomorrow I'm going to go look at a Springfield and compare it to the 229 again. The Kimber Royal II is on my picks list for 1911s at the moment.

125gr in a 10MM?? ya mean 175gr right??

I handload 135 grn hollowpionts for my glock 20 and they come out at 1700fps kinda makes federals loads wimpy. NM you cant beat a Sig. I carry a sig 229 357 sig all the time. I also have a sig 226 which gets carried sometimes.

Would a gun shop let me handle and possibly fire any of these guns? I'm 18 and in Massachusetts (:().

The more I see the USP, the more I like it. The double and single action options, ability to lock it with the hammer cocked, and the mag release are all pretty tempting. As Spark said, it seems like it's close to a 1911 with a polymer body. A little less soul, but maybe a little more practical. I'm not bothered by the price...it's not like I don't have plenty of time to save up.

I've got an STI Trojan and by buddy has two USP's, one in .45 and one in 9mm. We go shooting together all the time, so I've handled the USP's a bit.

There is absolutely no comparison. The Trojan is a swiss watch compared to it. The USP is blocky, top-heavy, and the trigger is a joke compared to the 1911.

As far as reliability goes, I've got 500 rounds through it now without any sort of malfunction.

No, I mean 125 gr. in the 10mm...It's a Federal +P JHP, (and is close to 1300fps.). The Win. Silvertip is right-around 175 grains.

whats so great about that, my .357SIG will do better than 1300 with a 125 and i dont think 1MM OD diff is gonna matter much, ya lost me on that one bud.

The majority of serious shooters still use the 1911 which should tell you something. And, of course, nothing compares to the 1911 trigger.

But, pick what you shoot best. Many public ranges will rent you pistols to shoot.

I love/hate Glocks. I wish they were prettier, I wish they had better triggers.

But their positives far outweigh their negatives, at least as far as an IDPA/concealed carry pistol.

It is true that the majority of serious shooters shoot 1911s. But II'd lay money on the issue that most of them shoot them because of their triggers.

I'm a pretty "serious" shooter.. OK, I'm no Rob Leatham or Dave Sevigny, but pretty serious. If I could find a 1911 that had the ergonomics of a Glock, I'd be shooting THAT!
