Probs going to get one to throw in the truck toolbox. Can't understand why this wasn't one of my first knives.

Let me hear your stories.

Are you in Europe? They are not available in the states. Ii think they are good beaters. Not refined, but nothing wrong with them either.

Do you know why they are not available in the states, can't you just order one from a retailer in euro? Also I'm not in states or Euro.

In my humble opinion, you'd be better off with a USA or Taiwanese-made 1095/5160/52100/SK5/SK85 blade for a "truck" knife.

The Glock 78 is pretty soft, if I remember correctly...something like 55 HRC. 🤷‍♂️

Any specific recommendations at the same price point as the Glock??

Also is a softer metal that bad for a heater?

I got this off of the bay a while back. I just looked and they have some right now. You just have to pay a little more. I also have 3 more of the 81's. 2 of the 81's I paid 20 dollars each at my local gunshop, they were new in the blister packs. I think they are fine knives for the money.

Man, at about 50 bucks, you'd be hard-pressed to find something comparable. (*I LOVE my little Cold Steel SK-5 SRK [*about $35], but it doesn't have the span of the 78)

Softer metal can be great for a beater. Unfortunately, at 55 HRC, it'll probably have the edge retention of a wet noodle.

I've got you, man.

Howza'bout a Cold Steel 52100 "Drop Forged Survivalist"?

Be patient and play your cards right, and you may be able to score one of these very close to the same price point...

Not surprised CS came up as value for money inexpensive beater. I will get an SRK and a the drop forged survivalist as well. Been on my to buy list for awhile.

I've own a lot of Glock handguns & bought a M78 & a M81 just bc they were Glocks.

Bought the M78 from a US source & the M81, which was harder to find at the time, from Europe.

Didn't buy them to use them -- just to own them -- & I'll be selling them soon.

The Glock model 81 field knife can be had from US retailers for $35. No one in the US has the 78 in stock. To purchase a 78 from Europe, it would cost around $75. To me, it is worth it as a $35 beater, not a $75 beater. As the others have said, there are other options for $75.

If you ever really do need to use a knife in your car/truck, I'd rather have one that I trust to actually be useful and sturdy. Spend a little more for the CS survivalist, it's only like $70
I agree with this, I have two knives I keep in my truck. A Junglas 2 and a BK2.

Had one years ago. As a knife, it was pretty pathetic. Terrible cutting geometry and didn't hold an edge worth a damn. It worked okay as a prybar with one sort of sharp edge and it was plenty tough but, IMO, what is was likely designed for was to pry open boxes, maybe cut open an MRE and survive soldiers using it to amuse themselves while they HUAW.

I've been looking at them they can be had here in the UK for just over £40. I don't collect but if you collect military knives then I guess it's a "must".

Imo the 140mm Terava Jaakaripuuko is a superior beater knife for the van. Stronger, cuts better, better steel, edge retention etc... Although beater knife doesn't do it justice as its a good knife at any price, which the Glock isn't.

Like the Peltonen Sissipuukko.
