Last week I bought a glock 17 gen 3 brand new. I am a big 1911 guy, but I wanted to give glock a shot. My reasoning was that even if I dont carry it then it will atleast make a good platform to teach my girlfriend how to shoot. I was planning on getting a gen 4 but I wanted to avoid the brass to the face issue, so i figured the gen 3 would be the right way to go. Today I took her and my brother out to show them how to safely handle and shoot a pistol. Unfortunately I thought that would also be a good time to just bring a bunch of rounds and break the gun in while letting them get comfortable. The first few shots were really bumpy, with jams and failures to feed after almost every round. Then about halfway through the magazine I started getting shells ejecting right into my face, it is a good thing I had eye protection on. The jamming and brass to the face continued and the whole brass to the face issue caused alot of flinching for my girlfriend. I did not push her to shoot it much as I dont blame her, one almost went down her shirt. I figured it may just be a break in issue, but after over 400 rounds the issues continued. I used 4 different types of ammo. Two types of 115 grain target ammunition, and two types of defensive hollow points. All of the ammunition had the same problems. I did notice the 135 grain hollow points didnt jam as much (still did a few times) but they did hit your face harder upon ejecting. I am not sure where to go with this, is it a common problem for glocks, maybe something I am doing wrong? Or did I get a dud and should I be sending this back? I would not feel comfortable carrying this gun or further teaching my family with it. If I had to ever shoot it without safety glasses I would really fear for my safety...Thanks you all.

Could also be a magazine problem.. Did you try switching the mags out?

I used 5 different Glock factory 17 round magazines. It seemed to have the same problem regardless. I think tomorrow I will try to take a video of the brass to the face issue. Also I did clean the gun well before I ever fired it before thats thrown out there, Im pretty anal about cleaning my guns.

I have an older Glock .40. My wife can get it to hit her with brass if she holds it very limp and loose. It has only happened once.

I have never been able to replicate it.

Not sure what the fix would be, or how to tune the ejector. Glocktalk.com might have a tip.

Sounds like it needs to go back.. Trade it for a G19 gen3!

It was very hard to pick between the Glock 19 and the Glock 17. The 21 didnt look too bad either and I had plans to check them out but this is kind of leaving a bad taste in my mouth...

I thought that Glock didn't recommend cleaning for at least the first 500 rds- I guess they put some kind of "goop" on the slide rails that effectively "laps" the slide to the frame? I didn't clean my gen 3 G17 until I put at least 500 rounds through it (as the dealer recommended) and have maybe been hit by 1-2 pieces of brass in over 5k rounds...

I have the 26 and 17. I like the 26 because it can fulfill the same niche as the 19 by running the 19 mag/spacer setup. So i have all 3 sizes.

And I'd send it back. My gen 3 17 has never ever malfunctions(600-700rds prolly). Netiher as the 26(1k rds). Never.

Man, I've owned a lot of Glocks and different calibers, never ever had the first issue, sounds like that one IS a dud.., if I were you I would send it to Glock.., I've been to there place in Smyrna and they have very good customer service, to be honest the best I've experienced. They went out of there way to help me, and the other customers that came in while I was waiting..I had them install there NS on one of mine..good luck with the issue.

My 22C has only ever had fail to lock slide on empty (and when I watched my friend shoot, he was using the slide release as a thumb rest, continuously pressing it down). I had him alter his grip, and the "problem" went away.

Thousands of rounds with no problems.

The brass hitting you in the face in an ejector problem.
All the failures to feed, sounds more like a problem with the feed ramp of the barrel.
No matter what the problem is, I would be contacting Glock and sending it to them for repair.

I won't say I have never heard of a Glock having a problem but yours are rare.
As for cleaning it, I wouldn't waste a lot of time trying to get it spotless. Get the big chunks off, clean the inside of the barrel, lube then shoot.

My M&P I carry at work might get a decent cleaning every couple thousand rounds. A quick trip to the range and a couple hundred rounds would take about 5 minutes to clean.

Clean the goop out and oil it up as per your instruction manual. Try running some hotter rounds through it to see if the problems continue. Sometimes the 9mm Glocks need a little kick in the pants at first, especially the 34 and the 17L. Those long slides take some breaking in.

Also, try adjusting your grip higher up the frame, if possible. You could be getting some timing issues or not getting behind the gun quite enough.

If it gives you any more issues, send it back for repair.

What Holmes said. Glocks and most semi's like a "hot" round to cycle better, and limp wrists dampen that recoil cycle as well.

Firm hold, good ammo and see what happens.

Sounds like the extractor needs adjustment. I've never seen this with a Glock but has happened with a Wilson Combat 1911...

Not a very common issue. Good luck.

I have a 3rd gen. Glock 17 with about 2k rounds through it. I never had a problem with it jamming or extracting incorrectly. I did break it in with around 300 rounds before cleaning it though, & I have done some mods on it since then. I would contact Glock & send it back in for service. The problems you are having sound like a lemon got through QC. I have a friend who has a first gen. Glock 17 with about 20k+ rounds through it & its still going like a champ. I hope they are able to get yours operating correctly, good luck.

Sorry to hear your issue with the pistol, this is not common for Glocks. I have carried Glock pistols since 1992 and have been an armorer since then as well, to me it sounds like an extractor/ejector issue. They are two different parts and I would be contacting Glock and explain your issues to them. Years back I had an issue with extractors in our Glock 21s, it turned out the wrong extractors were used and after replacing with the right ones all issues went away. You pistol will shoot all different types of ammo but using hotter or +P type ammo will not make it shoot better or worse, using a good firm grip and not limp wristing will ensure proper operation of the pistol. Dont give up on the pistol, Ive put my life on the line with it and it never let me down and served me well. Call Glock and they will make it right. Good Luck and let us know what happens.

This has been a much-discussed issue with the Gen 4s on the Glocktalk forum, and it began to show up toward the end of Gen 3 production.

It's very real, and more of an extractor problem. Glock has changed the extractor two or three times in recent years.

Several fixes have been tried, including a mix of older extractor parts & those from Apex. Some worked, some didn't.

Glock is very used to getting them back with this problem.
It's not shooter error, it's not an ammunition issue, and it's not an ejector issue.
Call & arrange for a return.
