How come some pictures of tigerhide micarta knives have a glossy finish? I thought I've heard someone say they are lacquered. I can't remember or find it tho. I'll post some better pics later when I get home. I know the nmoash came this way from the shop . The other glossy ones I don't know. Here are few I've found of the shiney stuff . The first pic shows how I normally see tigerhide. I know some of you hogs know the answer to this mystery. Thanks

My old NMOASH was lacquered from factory. Those were the only ones, I think.

Mineral oil just makes the handles look wet. This was much different.

Wax for "safe" keeping.

Here's a pic of my old NMOASH

Interesting..
How does it feel in hand, doc? Is it practical?
Thanks for the gorgeous pictures.

Mine is the same way. Just wish I knew if I could get my other tigerhide blades the same way. Some of that tigerhide looks to be a lighter shade of tan also. I think it would need something to coat but not absorb. Very nice pics btw.

I believe Troy is correct on this. I remember reading about this somewhere but I can't find the thread.

It's possible they were the only ones from the factory. But I've seen pics of other knives glossy. I'm curious of the process used to do it , and /or if it's a different material.

Again, I am pretty sure I remember an old Hog mention Ren Wax as the applied material for that perma-wet look since it doesn't bleed/dry out like oil yet is harder to remove as a result. I never tried it myself as I am a fan of the clean dry look, but it would be neat for someone who does like it to try it and then post back their results.

I'm gonna see what this renwax is all about. Must be multiple coats and some serious buffing to get that varnished look. Just wish I knew for sure. I don't want to get stuck in the in between stage of fondled and oily .I too like the clean dry look, but would love my sfnoLE to look like the one pictured.

Ren Wax is also what I seem to recall being used.

Actually, Renaissance Wax is pretty amazing stuff. A little bit goes a LONG way, and it doesn't really require much buffing at all. If you decide to buy some, the small 65ml tin will last a long time.

Gunstock oil (linseed based) will put a permanent sheen on it. Sadly, most of the Tigerhide I've ever gotten was more black than anything. :( And then there was the period where Busse had the dullest CNC blades for the micarta and it would come out fuzzy. FUZZY!

Gimme snakeskin. Rare. Old school. I love it.

I like the wet/darker Micarta look.
Thanks to the info from AZTim & SpyderPhreak, I ordered some Ren Wax and tried it out on my DTBM with Black Micarta.
It really brings out the highlight colors of the Micarta and does indeed make it shiny:

I forgot to do a before shot and realized that after I put the first coat on. DOH! :grumpy:
A little really does go a long way as SpyderPhreak said, and this effect is from two light coats of Ren Wax.

Me likey! :D

I think I may try it on the Green Micarta on my TGP when I get that.

That looks good evlcat. Did it darken up the micarta from what it was before the ren wax? The shine looks nice. Did you have to buff a lot?

Glad it worked well for you evltcat! I've been impressed by the stuff every time I've used it. There is a reason that museums use this stuff.

I think I'm going to try this on my green linen Leprechaun AD to see how it turns out.

A little more info - if you want to remove the Ren Wax, a light scrub using a soft scrub brush under warm water with Dawn dishsoap will work well. Same goes for an oiled handle. Will make the micarta look like new after the water dries off.

I still think that sanding Micarta makes it 10 times better. My MOABOLO was hand smoothed from Busse but i have sanded it up to 2500 grit and it's so sticky from that i can't wait to get my other blades completely smooth. Perfection

Yes, it darkened the Micarta, it was originally that very light grey color Busse Black Micarta has when clean and dry. The change is subtle as you can see, and add a really nice sheen.
I used two light coats and a few minutes of buffing between each coat.
I'll make sure to do some BEFORE pix with the TGP.
