Gloves friendly folder

Being able to close a knife quickly and easily while wearing gloves is also an important consideration.

The Benchmade Griptilians are my favourite knives for work, where I need to be able to operate my knife while wearing thick fire gloves. The blade can be deployed very quickly with a quick flick, by pulling back on the Axis studs or by regular thumbing open. Closing is also a breeze.

I also like the Spyderco lockbacks, namely the Endura, Pacific Salt and Atlantic Salt.

Spyderco Waved Endura, simply pull it out of your pocket and its ready to do the job, no flipping, fiddling for thumbstuds or other opening devices. Won't set you back an arm and a leg and will not let you down.

Spyderco need to make one with a full, flat ground blade and G10 handles and they would have another winner.

Spyderco Military is designed with this application in mind. It works very well with gloves.

I feel like I'm in the minority here, but I have a cheap little CRKT M16-03Z that I use with heavy gloves on all the time, and it works great. Might not be the most glamorous knife listed in this thread but it's inexpensive and it gets the job done. Has a prominent flipper, a really solid lockup, and I actually believe grip is improved with gloves on, since the Zytel can sometimes be slippery with bare hands.

Whoops, after re-reading the OP, I realized that you are looking for something a little more substantial in cost, which would explain why I'm in the minority. Sorry! If you are looking for something that costs $40 as opposed to $240, you know where to look!

Let me confirm what STR said - the SnG and it's Buck cousin is the best gloved hand knife out there. I own both, and have used both for years. The knife design actually works better and is more comfortable gloved than barehanded. It's apparent it was designed that way, and particularly in light of the intended customer - a soldier in the line of duty. Most wear some kind of glove in the field.

A gloved hand knife can have a lot of traction, so grooved grips work well. Oversized openers are necessary, with prominent features. Large studs or holes best there. The lock require lots of access to close with gloves, so ample cutaways are necessary.

That makes the whole design look overdone, and invites criticism from EDC barehand users, but the design wasn't optimized for a backroom box cutter, either. It was made for rough duty outside in inclement weather - with gloves on. So, no slick handled tiny stud knife with simple straight grip will do it. It takes bold designs to make it work.

Don't look for pretty, look for what works.

+1 on the ZT200 (especially for the flipper), though you can't go wrong with the spydercos. I don't have a military yet, but the endura works great with gloves for me

I agree with the Spyderco Millie, but respectfully sugjest the Paramilitary, and any other Spyderco(IMO):o Something like my favorite...The Ti-ATR that have the very effective *cobra hood* for by-feel deployment!

Hi there, good to see another Aucklander on the forum. I too was looking for strong Hd folder that I could easily use with leather rigging gloves on not so long ago.
I had I lot of recommendations on the forum for the ZT knives, which look overbuilt and very strong however at the end of the day they just looked too "tactical" for me. I was wanting a Bm Ruckus at the time, but the price of getting one down here is ridiculous, also I didnt want to upset customs with bringing in a folder with a blade larger than 4 inches.
Any way I wound up getting the Spyderco Chinook III, I could not be happier with this knife. Awesome strong lockup and a very useful blade shape.
By the way I've since found a retailer in Oz that seems to have BM's and Spyderco's at near "affordable NZ prices" if your interested just Pm me.

Bo.

Knives that have worked well for me are the Spyderco Military and Chinook III, the Kershaw JYD II is big enough to work with gloves as well.

ZT MUDD. The Hawk lock is very easy to use with work gloves on. Easily opens and closes with one hand, and can be done with a flick of the wrist. The sealed pivot is a very nice feature. This is one tough work knife.
