Glued in shields on a traditional really takes away from the traditional...

Glued on shields don't bother me. If glued properly they are quite durable. And if not glued properly I am quite capable of gluing it back in.

I have some experience with pocket knives and over the years have had only one shield come off. I glued it back on.

I could care less, so as long as they're not going to come out. That being said I've knocked out the one on my yellow Case Peanut, so Case needs to do something different, but I'm sure there are glued shields that are quite strong.

Bugs me too, but then so do car windows without side vents, and Coca-Cola made with corn syrup instead of sugar.

Out of all the knives I have owned, I have only had one shield fall off.... Ya, it kinda made me grumpy, but it didn't take long to fix, and it never came off again.

It doesn't matter if it is knives, cars, or what have you, fasteners are being replaced by adhesives... Obviously they can't use adhesives in a lot of applications, but they certainly do use it when they can. Some of the stuff available today, is very strong, however I don't think the knife companies are using the really good stuff :D

I only have one Case that has lost a Shield, and it's a circa 60's-70's Stockman, and it was pinned.

I've had a few shields fall off. From my observations:
1. The glue covered less than half the mating surface.
2. The shields weren't that suited to glueing, having an essentially smooth surface.
3. The glue didn't seem very tough.

I don't see any reason why glue won't work, but they have to do it properly.

I've had one glued shield ever pop off and that after I carried the knife more than 10 years. Boker sent me another for free, but I glued the old worn one back onto the knife even though the new one looked better. Used a zap-a-gap type super glue. Not a big deal. Not to me anyway.

Yes, it's OK if you can find the shield, otherwise you are left with a knife with a gaping socket while hoping the company sends you the correct shield.

Generally, I like shields and find the variety and history of them on Traditional pocket knives to be very interesting, when chosen correctly they enhance the look of a knife, and you want it to stay on ;)

I agree with Willgoy.
The shield adds another layer of history and tradition, not to mention an appreciation for the maker. When a shield falls out...I lose respect for the name that used to be there.
This is why I love my GEC and vintage Case knives.
