Glutton for Pain? A New Special Project . . .

Well, being the glutton for pain that I am, we've got a new project - one that I think is going to solve the "bowie" project and give a new spin to the Otto Rieger khukuri.

I just got off the phone with Ken Onion. I called him to tell him about the Otto Rieger khukuri, and we got to talking about his "Pig Sticker" that he built about 5 years ago. We got to talking, and guess what: he told me I could do a limited edition run of about 10 khukuris modeled exactly like his "Pig Sticker":

I don't know the specs on the knife, but we did a "hand-shake" agreement to do 10 of them (well, 11 if you count the prototype that he'll get to keep). Expect the blade to be about 9 inches long. Handle will be contoured for a hand-snug fit. First 10 people to respond this post by registering below get them. SEND NO MONEY (AND NO EMAILING IS NECESSARY EITHER). Basically, these things will be done when they are done, as I don't want a repeat of the WWIII epic (although since the whole thing will be Nepali made, there's not much chance of that). Because of the "one-continent" production of this one, I'd expect something right around late summer. And yes, they'll be numbered from 1 to 10. It'll be called the Onion Khukuri.

And no need to be shy about registering because of pricing issues. It'll be about $130.00 (maybe a little less).

Craig, please put me down for two (2), one for me and one for my son. Thanks, Scott

Count me in! I was considering a mini-jungle type special order with modern materials. That looks as though it might fill that niche.

Wow! Half of them gone already!

I'm really excited about this.

Incidentally, Ken is probably the nicest person I've talked to in a month. The guy is full of integrity and "no-ego" - he actually used the words "gentleman's agreement" - rare in this day and age. I even offered him profit sharing, and he declined! He just wanted a few knives now and then. AMAZING!

Well Craig,

If these aren't going to be made for a while and you won't need $ for a while then count me in for one. Wooden handles if it's an option.

One here!!! serial number 9 if we have a choice.

For the record, let me state that I would love to have one of these...but alas, I have just bought a new home to make room for our new addition to the fam, and the mortgage is going to be more than double what I'm paying now. This is going to be a big shock to my wallet, so much to my dismay I will not be able to sign on for one of these. Therefore, if it's okay with you guys, I will just have to live vicariously through you. I will have serial #P11 (The P is for Pretend), and I will bug Craig incessently about why those #$*&@ lazy imaginary kamis haven't finished my imaginary Onion Khukuri yet, etc, etc. (I can see Craig rolling his eyes right now.) Of course, the solution is for Craig to tell me to just pretend that it's already arrived at my door. Anyway, Craig, please tell the IB's (Imaginary Bishwakarmas) to make sure my s#P11 has a cho on it; otherwise it's not a real khukuri.

Maybe if I could convince my wife that knives are a more important necessity than shelter because if you have good knives, you can always build a shelter any time. What about that, guys? Think it'll fly?

Craig,

Just got home from work, and if there are any left, put down one from the west coast. Darn time difference anyway.

Well, if Ken doesn't have a problem with this (and I'm pretty sure he wont), I'll make as many as are asked for on posts made here through July 1 2000 at 0001. What a capitalist I am!

As for handles, they'll ALL be horn - sorry, but logistics will preclude special orders on this baby. Maybe I'll do a future iteration in wood, but for now, horn is it.

Let the games begin!!!!! (Marya gave me QUITE a look when I let her in that we were doing another special project). You've seen that look before, I'm sure.

Craig,

I have been around custom knives for better than 30 enjoyable years. I have also gotten quite a few knifemakers "miffed" at me for this next statement."There are no new knife designs, just new materials". While this is not 100% true it is 99.99% valid. Some folder locking designs being the exception.

Don't get me wrong. I know Ken and like his style. It is just so neat that I open Ron Flook's book on British military blades and see on page 11-12 two Victorian era British made knives that are a lot like Ken's. I do not think he has ever seen these. I DO NOT want anyone to think that this knife was plagerized. It just shows that what worked in the past still works today and good blade makers know what works.Ken of course made a Much better looking and quality knife than the two in the book.Wish I could order one myself.

Just too much time on my hands. I did learn to read from my dad's Knife and gun book collection. Instead of "See Spot run" I said "Johnny got his gun".

Fun and games, Cheers,

ts

If I can get in on it put my name in too. I can't seem to turn a good blade down.

Of course it is an old design BMW. What is not? I ride a `92 BMW R100R,with not nearly enough miles on it. I`ve been meaning to do some mods. The thing won`t give me an excuse to go in.And, it doesn`t leak oil.Take that hog drivers. The BMW is just a very, very old aircraft engine.
