All,

I want to recommend the movie Serenity to all of you. It's an excellent SciFi / action movie with solid characters and a great story. The heroes are a band of semi-outcasts and semi-outlaws living in a solar system geverned by some kind of Fascist state. The captain and his 1st mate are ex-soldiers in a civil war that opposed them to the current government (obviously, their side lost :)).

The Weekly Standard had that great sentence to explain the movie: "Think of it as Star Wars, if Han Solo were the main character, and he still shot Greedo first."

The world is a mix of space opera and western (a lot of planets have been terraformed but are inhabited by people living a pioneer lifestyle). Chinese culture has permeated the world, to the point that swearing is mostly done in Chinese (I'm pretty sure most of the swearing isn't PG-13, but since it's in Chinese...)

Anyway - this is a cool movie, lots of fun to watch, and I recommend it to everyone here.

Totally agree. A space opera that's legitimately funny and exciting, and you end up really _caring_ what happens to each character. And there's bona-fide, honest-to-God suspense. We've been needing one of them ever since Star Wars: the Phantom Disappointment.

I had to actually look this up on the net just now. I couldn't remember what actually happened other than the greedo dude dying. NOW I UNDERSTAND.

Anyway, am looking forward to watching it as i've not heard a bad review of it yet, but with the baby out it's unlikely that me and the wife are gonna be going to the movies anytime soon.

Hear Hear!

I was a big fan of the show and the movie does not disappoint for fans or newbies. I'm going again!

Here's a question, just because I'm curious:
Where does the term "Firefly" come from? Thanks.

I think the ship looks like a bug, and since its rear-end kinda glows...

The ship is shaped like an insect and it's engine puts out a yellow glow from the back similiar to a firefly, which is why it and other ships of its class were called "Firefly Class Transports" on the series.

The ships actual name is "The Serenity" named after the Battle For Serenity Valley, that the main character and captain was one of a few survivors of.

And yes, the movie is fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My wife and I have been enjoying the series on Sci Fi channel. I'm pretty stoked to see the Theater release. Glad to hear all the good things.

I've never seen the television series, is it necessary to watch the episodes before seeing the movie?

TIA, daloosh

No, but if you think you'll get the series anyway, just watch the initial, double-length episode before seeing the movie.

(If you watch a bunch of the series, you'll expect the movie to have the same feel as the tv show. Just a *little* bit of knowledge is probably the ideal, but the movie's definitely enjoyable either way.)

Thanks. That's GREAT info to have. I'm getting the series via eBay, and this way I can hold off on watching the whole thing.

Is there any sex?

:D

"Been more'ne a year since I had anything 'twixt my nethers didn't run on batteries!"

Yeah, there's sex, but it happens off-camera. There's no nudity, IIRC.

But that's not why you see Serenity. It's a science fiction Western, fercryinoutloud! And done right! There can be one or two good things in the world that don't involve naked women! ;)

GO SEE SERENITY!!!

I just got back, excellent movie. Why did I wait??
Go see it soon!!!
:)

I watched the all day marathon of the show on the Sci-fi channel the other day. Best sci fi since The Next Generation.
Looking forward to seeing the movie.
