Go to house defense knife

My dedicated home defense knife is a SAIGA 12 with two ten rounders. I can stab someone several times with 3 inch slugs, or stab them countless further times with the follow up 3 inch 00.

When I hear a bump in the night, a knife would literally be the last thing I'd be reaching for.

Remington 870 Express Tac 7+1

This is my bedside gun, with a side saddle carrying alternating hollow point slugs and 3'' 00buck.
My behind the dresser glock 22 with tac light is my night option.

I don't think I would use a knife in home defense. too close of combat to possibly have family at risk.
I don't want to go all Law Abiding Citizen on someones ass..

I have a drawer full of kitchen knives centrally located. Maybe not ideal but my wife has been know to go for them when spooked and they more reach than any other knives I have in the house.

Small bat would probably work better.

No knife, while my cur/pit bull mix dog is distracting the home invader, I will retrieve my Colt 1911 .45acp and confront the problem.
If I did not own a gun I would use a fighting cane, and as a last resort, my USMC Ka-bar knife, like Uncle Sam taught me how to use.
As others have said, distance is your friend. No matter how well you think you are trained, your brain and adrenaline will go into overdrive and you will pick up the nearest thing and start swinging.
Csisland, Scurvy092 and I, are all on the same page in our way of thinking...
"Walk softly and carry a big stick."

Never thought of using a knife as a home defense weapon. I have a bit of a history of being very violent when woken up the wrong way, so in all honesty if the intruder startles me awake, I'll probably tackle the intruder to the ground and turn his face inside out before even thinking of using a weapon

If I'm already awake and hear an intruder, I'll just load my speargun I keep under my bed since I don't own a firearm yet, because firearm laws in South Africa suck, but I don't think an intruder is going to argue with me either way if I point a firearm or a loaded 1.2m speargun in his face

But since this is for fun, I'd choose my 20 inch okapi machete

Of all my knives, my CS Ghurka Kukri would be my first choice. For self defense, I'll take that even over my HI khukuris. But if I have to rely on it, several layers of protection/early warning have already failed.

dissuasive, long enough and manipulable ;)

The stuff in the kitchen works better than most. They are actually designed specifically to cut flesh, whereas most field/camp knives are heavily built for processing wood. Also, all else being equal, you probably wouldn't want the jury to hear about your lethal "Death Monger 2000" knife.

Okay, while my first choice is my Smith and Wesson revolver, I have traveled to and by transportation where I could not have a gun. It happens. So, if no gun, then I want the crude, very effective, and disposable approach. When I was doing a cross country motorcycle trip, and planned to stop at a lot of museums along the way, like the Browning museum in Utah, the mountain man museum in Colorado, and there was no place on the bike to lock up a gun, I used small machetes.

The small Ontario was from before they had the 12 pinch Ontario out. It ws a 18 inch GI issue shortened and with a bowie clip point added. The Martindale is more low key looking, but a very effective slicer and chopper. I ain't fooling around with any folder. If I am in danger I want at least 12 inches of sharp, and I'll take more if I can get it.

All my knives are potential home defense knives. I'll use any of them if I have absolutely nothing else to use.

None of my knives are "dedicated" home defense knives. I've got plenty of stuff that keeps my distance from the bad guys for that. Knives are "desperation only."

The one advantage of having to use a cane all the time... it's in my hand and I'mma hit you with it!

Based on your criteria I can't answer your question as the only way if find myself in the situation you describe would be if I was in jail and the zombies were taking over, then at that point is grab whatever improvised shank or shiv I made while in stir.

This, people... This right here is exactly why the zombies will win... so few of us have dedicated Zombie Prevention Tools in our extensive arsenals.

It's pitiful really, how many people apparently can't read on this forum. The question was simple; what KNIFE would you use to defend yourself in case of a home invasion. The reading challenged members above apparently misread 'knife' for 'gun'- the poor sad dolts. That makes this thread a waste of time for members who can read and are interested in knives not guns.

I'm interested in knives and you didn't say what your go-to defense knives is, man. Go for it. I'll listen.

This is my kitchen knife block that is tactically displayed on my counter. The idea is to instill a subliminal sense of dread and/or foreshadowing in an intruder's mind. Perhaps they'd simply turn around, leave my home, abandon their criminal ways and look for honest work... :p :D

If it HAS to be a knife, and not any of the guns, shoes, laptops, pool cues, racquetball racquets, cell phone chargers, or fists I'd rather use, I'd grab my Busse TGLB or Tops .230 machete. The TGLB is heavy enough to be used as a hammer, and the sight of the machete would hopefully make the perp run away. In all honesty, I'd be more likely to grab my ESP FX guitar off of the wall and start swinging for the fences.

I have no intention to get that close to an intruder...that is what my shotgun is for...number 4 bird shot to say hello...if they don't get the message...double ot will say goodbye...or I'll sick my wife on them if I'm really pissed...

Nobody asked about firearms in the OP. Stay on topic or don't post...it's really quite simple.
