Compared to a lot of the guys around here I'm just a part-time newbie in the whole bushcraft/survival skills arena. But I have set one goal to accomplish in the next 6 months. I intend on spending at least 3 days and 2 nights in the woods just living off the land. This will definitely include foraging and most likely fishing and possibly trapping. I could easily survive without food for three days but the idea is to eat as well as possible. I can positively identify around 10 - 15 edible plants that I have found growing locally, so no matter what I should be able to keep at least something in my stomach. And if the fishing is successful then I can imagine actually being fairly well fed.

Any of you have specific goals you intend to accomplish in the coming months? Let's here 'em.

(FYI, my dog will not be required to participate, I will bring his dog food along)

Successfully make a bowdrill fire. Learn about local edible plants. Successfully trap at least one critter using a figure 4. Learn other trap designs.

I want to get good enough that I know I will start a bowdrill fire everytime I try it. That is about the only thing I am going to work on about everyday. Other than that, learn a lot more about wild edibles.

Theo,

That sounds like a great goal and I would love to join you on that outing!

Do you have any dates yet?

Well lets see:

For the spring my goal is to butcher about 10 roosters and six drakes I have running around here and get them in the freezer.

Get all the 09 kids I have sold to the buyers to free me up before summer.

Get the rest of my garden in.

For the summer it's finish cleaning out my barn and buck pen. Go to the WV Folk Festival in June and then leave there for 3 days and 2 nights backpacking in the Seneca Creek Back Country. July go for 4 days camping at the All Good Festival, August plan on hiking Otter Creek wilderness. I'd also like to work one solo trip (unless I can get Spooky to come up from KY for that one) in the Cranberry Wilderness in in July or August.

Sept I want to do a hike in the Blackwater Canyon Caanan area, and maybe in Oct either Roaring Plains or the Laurel Fork Wilderness.

Oh and sometime at home I want to finish developing the spring that is about a quarter mile behind my barn, and have it run down the hollow to a watering tank in my barn then down to my chicken coop, and then downhill to my garden so I can use the leftover for irrigation.

No firm dates yet but it would be really great to have company  Let's try to arrange something, maybe it could be a New England Foragers Gathering

I was planning on doing it in Harriman Park simply because I know where most of the wild edibles are located but I'm open to exploring something new.

For me its to lose atlist 10lb, build stamina and get in much better shape. Also go to the high sierra backpacking next month for a few days maybe a week... But getting in shape is tops for me now.

Sasha

Mine is close to Sasha's. I've already dropped 27 pounds since the first of the year, and want to drop another 15-20 by the end of September. I've also increased my walking and exercise so I can be ready for an expedition the last of September or the first of October.

Realizing that you're overweight and out of shape is a great motivator (for me, at least).
